Mrs. Pierre Bacot (Marianne Fleur Du Gue) ca. 1708-10 Henrietta Johnston American The pastels of the Bacots (see also 47.103.24) were among the first that Johnston executed in Charleston, South Carolina, just following her arrival there from Dublin. The artist rendered the Bacots facial features with precision and blended colors, particularly in the hair, as she had done in Ireland. Pierre Bacot, also called Peter, was born in Tours, France, in 1684 and was brought by his family to South Carolina as an infant. After his fathers death in 1702, Bacot moved to Goose Creek, where he bought and sold land for a living. He married Marianne Fleur Du Gue sometime after 1705.. Mrs. Edward Green (Mary Storer) 1765 John Singleton Copley American Copley produced at least fifty-five pastel portraits before he left America in 1774. The artist and his affluent sitters would have been aware of the fashionability of pastels in Europe, and Copley, who worked rather painstakingly in oil, probably enjoyed the expedience and brilliance offered by the crayons. Few masters of this difficult medium have been able to match his expert rendering of satin, lace, pearls, flowers, and background drapery. Study for a Portrait of a Woman 1670s Sir Peter Lely (Pieter van der Faes) Dutch, British This sketch provides a good example of Lelys working method, as one of the most successful portraitists in England in the second half of the seventeenth century. Following the example of Van Dyck, Lely painted only the sitters head in his or her presence, sometimes laying in an outline for the pose and costume. He then employed assistants to complete the drapery and background. For certain well-known sitters, Lely would retain his original head study to aid in the production of replicas. Because Lely assimilated his female sitters to a contemporary ideal of beauty, it can often be difficult to identify them today, as is the case with this unknown woman..
