He served as a Staff Officer in the Division of Purchase, Storage, and Traffic during World War I. Lt. G.C. Putnam and Capt. Hill photographed together. Lt. Putnam was a skilled American pilot and was tragically killed in combat on September 16th. He was credited with officially bringing down ten German planes and unofficially 14 more. He was highly regarded as one of the best American fliers.

He speaks Ottowa and English and received education at Indian School in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Occupation-wise, he received two years of training as a stationary engineer.

2nd Lieutenant Edward H. Looke of Co. A, 128th Infantry, was killed in action on October 18, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. This photograph was taken posthumously and the information was officially issued on August 1, 1919. It is marked "For Official Use Only" with the reference number 061217.
