District Coast Guard Officer On Supply Ship. Coast Guard Boatswain Edwin J. Dowling, Jr., of 2026 Lawrence Street, Washington, D.C., is serving aboard a Coast Guard-manned Army freight-supply ship which delivers fighting equipment to advanced Pacific combat zones. Warrant Officer Dowling is a former New York Daily News and Daily Mirror photographer. A son, Edwin J., III, is a Navy seaman.

Indian Coast Guardsman "On the Warpath". Coast Guardsman George "White Bear" Drapeaux, a Sioux Indian of Wagner, South Dakota, has traveled more than 100,000 miles in the service of the U. S. Coast Guard since the war began. Now a gunner on a Coast Guard-manned assault transport somewhere in the Pacific, he was bombed at Singapore two weeks after Pearl Harbor and survived the burning of another transport in the Atlantic.

Prize-Winning Coast Guard Artist is Pacific Invasion Veteran. Coast Guard Combat Artist Ken Riley, of Parsons, Kansas, rides landing barge towards an invasion beach in the Far Pacific. Riley, a veteran of Tarawa, the Marshalls and Saipan, was awarded the "best in the show" prize for his painting, "For Thine Is the Kingdom," exhibited in the Times-Herald's Seventh Annual Outdoor Art Fair in Washington, D.C. The 25-year-old Kansan's sketches of beach warfare have won him acclaim as one of the outstanding young artists of the war.

Replaces Brother In Coast Guard. Seventeen-year-old Joseph A. Gadek, Jr., is taking his brother's place in the Coast Guard. The lad's brother died when the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba sank as the result of an underwater explosion while on convoy duty in the North Atlantic. Joseph, an apprentice seaman at the Coast Guard Training Station, Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, New York, is shown here with the Purple Heart posthumously awarded his brother. His home is at 512 Alexander Ave., Linden, N.J.

Skipper Of The Bombed USS Callaway. Coast Guard Captain Donald C. McNeil, of West Newton, Mass., is skipper of the USS Callaway, the Coast Guard-manned invasion transport which the Navy reported today as "back in action" after being attacked by Japanese planes in the Sulu Sea prior to the Luzon landings. The Coast Guard-manned ship suffered nearly 50 casualties and damage to her superstructure when an enemy attacker planted a bomb near her flying bridge. The Callaway proceeded to Luzon, discharged her troops, and is credited with bagging three enemy planes before retiring for repairs. Earlier in the war, Captain McNeil commanded a Coast Guard combat cutter in the Atlantic and was nicknamed "Depth Charge McNeil" for his exploits against the German submarines.

Coast Guard, participated in the invasions of Saipan and Tinian aboard a Coast Guard-manned assault transport during nine months of overseas duty. He's resting at home before reporting for a new assignment.

A 12-foot slit in her hull, suffered when she rammed the sixth sub encountered, flooded the CAMPBELL's engine room, and left the Coast Guard cutter helpless. She was safely towed 800 miles to an unnamed East coast port for repair.
