Portrait of Louis XVI, King of France. Workshop of Joseph Siffred Duplessis (1725-1802), oil on canvas, c. 1777-1789. Duplessis painted the first version of this portrait in 1777. Although the king wears his principal chivalric orders, he is portrayed in relatively simple attire and assumes an informal pose. This portrait found great favour, and Duplessis was repeatedly commissioned to copy it. This likeness was thus widely disseminated and hung in government buildings and palaces, among other places.

Thomas Jefferson. Artist: John Trumbull (American, Lebanon, Connecticut 1756-1843 New York). Dimensions: 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. (11.4 x 8.3 cm). Date: 1788.The Connecticut-born Trumbull took on, as an almost divine mission, the recording for posterity of the participants in the great events of the American Revolution. Trumbull met Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) in London in 1785. Jefferson, then America's minister to France, invited the artist to be his guest in Paris, and Trumbull accepted the offer twice, in 1786 and 1787. On the second visit, he painted Jefferson from life directly into his small canvas depicting the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to John Hancock (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn.). The present portrait, copied from the Yale picture, was painted for Jefferson, who presented it to his close friend Mrs. John B. Church. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Portrait of Arnoldus van Rijneveld. The painter Louis Tocqué was accepted into the French Académie Royale in 1734. His work was highly sought after at that time. He was much admired for his ability to evoke an informal atmosphere, while nevertheless meticulously rendering his sitters sumptuous clothing and accessories. Arnoldus van Rijnevelds fashionable outfit, undoubtedly from Paris, is made of velvet embroidered with gold thread.

Eugène Joseph Stanislas Foullon d'Ecotier (1753-1821) 1785 Antoine Vestier French Eugène Foullon dEcotier must have commissioned this portrait after his appointment in June 1785 as Intendant of Guadeloupe and before his departure for the French colony that November. In the interim, Vestier showed it at the Salon of 1785. Vestiers tendency to pick out minute details is evident in his depictions of the map of Guadeloupe and the Ordonnances de la Marine, a publication that outlined regulations for colonial administration. The enslaved labor producing the sugar and cacao that made Guadeloupe so lucrative for the French economy is unacknowledged by these props. George Henry Remsen. Artist: William Verstille (American, Boston, Massachusetts 1757-1803 Boston, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 1 7/8 x 1 1/2 in. (4.8 x 3.7 cm). Date: ca. 1790.Verstille painted his first miniatures during the American Revolution, when he made small portraits of officers while a member of the troops. After the war, he lived in Connecticut and then moved to Philadelphia and New York, where he learned a bit from the fine miniaturist John Ramage (24.109.93). In New York, he kept a detailed account book recording his commissions for mourning pieces, hairwork, and jewelry. His portrait of George Henry Remsen (1768-1804), a member of a prominent merchant family, dates from his New York period: the brushwork has a sketchy quality with thin wavering lines. Remsen is portrayed in Verstille's typical fashion, with long, narrow eyes, a long crooked nose, lips that curl at the corners, and bristly hair. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
