Letitia Wilson Jordan was the sister of Thomas Eakinss friend and student David Wilson Jordan. Eakins had seen her at a party and was so taken with the young woman that he asked her to pose for him in the same outfit she had worn that evening. The thoughtful, distanced expression on Jordans face evidences Eakinss interest in conveying the emotional essence of his subjects. The careful modeling of the sitters body is characteristic of Eakinss unflinching naturalism. American Art 1888

Mrs. Katherine Matthews 1812-13 Thomas Sully American According to the artists personal registers, this portrait was painted between December 1, 1812 and January 31, 1813, and cost the sitter seventy dollars. It reveals the influence of Sully's English trip of 1809-10, during which time he studied with Benjamin West and found his stylistic model in the work of the English portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence. In fact, this painting is a half-length adaptation of Lawrence's "Elizabeth Farren, Countess of Derby" (also in the Museum's collection). The sitters dynamic gesture, turn of the head, and fashionable fur wrap—as well as Sullys bravura brushwork—are all borrowed from Lawrence. However, the American de-emphasizes the sensuality of the original work, stressing instead an air of charm and social standing suitable for a Philadelphia lady.. Mrs. Katherine Matthews 12698

Portrait of Lizzy Ansingh. Lizzy Ansingh and Thérèse Schwartze belonged to the Amsterdamse Joffers, a group of women painters active around 1900. Schwartze was the undisputed star and enjoyed great success with her fashionable society portraits. This informal likeness of her niece Lizzy Ansingh is one of her best. The contrast between light and dark convey intimacy, and the swift, vigorous brushstrokes and red accent on the bright green dress radiate power.
