Author: François Leroy de Liancourt.Christ with a Staff. Artist: Follower of Rembrandt (Dutch, third quarter 17th century). Dimensions: 37 1/2 x 32 1/2 in. (95.3 x 82.6 cm). This impressive picture was clearly inspired by Rembrandt's style of the 1660s and was conceivably painted in his workshop. The broad, uniform application of paint and rather decorative use of strokes and scratches imitate some of Rembrandt's surface effects but fail to achieve his sense of volume, various textures, and atmosphere. A few scholars have suggested the manner of execution is similar to that of Arent de Gelder (1645-1727), Rembrandt's last important pupil. Artist: Attributed to the Maestro delle Storie del Pane (Italian (Emilian), active late 15th century). Dimensions: Overall 19 3/4 x 14 5/8 in. (50.2 x 37.1 cm); painted surface 19 1/8 x 14 1/8 in. (48.6 x 35.9 cm). Date: 1494.This portrait and its pendant (1975.1.96) represent a husband and wife of the Gozzadini family of Bologna; the family's coat of arms appears prominently in both paintings. The inscribed architectural frieze in the background, which runs across both panels, attests to the commemorative function of the portraits: VT SIT NOSTRA FORMA SVPERSTES (In order that our features may survive). Probably made to celebrate a betrothal or marriage, the portraits contain numerous allusions to love and matrimony, such as the spray of flowers, known as pinks, held by the male sitter, and the fruit (perhaps a quince) held by his wife. The pelican and phoenix at lower left of the male portrait refer respectively to charUnequal lovers couple (between 1520-1550),circle of Lucas Cranach said "the old".Oil on canvas.Allegory on the French Invasion of 1672. In 1672 the Netherlands was invaded by the French. That disaster is allegorically rendered in the drawing at which the seated man looks: the Dutch lion is defeated, its weapons in pieces, the gate to its enclosure broken; above, the French rooster crows triumphantly. Symbolizing the other side is the standing man withan orange feather in his cap: he is a supporter of William III of Orange, who would avert the French threat.Portrait of African Male by Govert Flinck (1615-1660) Dutch painter of the Dutch Golden Age.
