Portrait of the Art Dealer Wisselingh. Artist: Charles Haslewood Shannon (British, Lincolnshire 1863-1937 Richmond). Dimensions: sheet: 11 7/16 x 7 5/16 in. (29 x 18.6 cm). Sitter: Elbert Jan van Wisselingh (Dutch, 1848-1912). Date: 1899.An accomplished portraitist, Shannon collected and studied old master drawings, and here uses a traditional three-color chalk technique to portray Elbert Jan van Wisselingh. The latter art dealer and print pubilsher came to London from Haarlem to establish the Dutch Gallery in 1892 as a London branch of E.J. van Wisselingh & Co. With Charles de Sousy Ricketts, Shannon worked on a range of artistic and publishing ventures around this time, and also made experimental lithographs, several representing Wisselingh. Study Head of an Old Man with a White Beard ca. 1617-20 Anthony van Dyck Flemish Rubenss practice of using real people as models for figures in his religious and mythological scenes was followed closely in Antwerp by his younger colleagues Jacob Jordaens and Anthony van Dyck. The present picture was once attributed to Rubens, but its comparatively soft forms and textured surfaces are typical of the young Van Dyck and contrast with Rubenss emphatic modeling and incisive draftsmanship.. Head of a Bearded Man. Artist: Domenico Fetti (Italian, Rome () 1591/92-1623 Venice). Dimensions: 13-/4 x 9-11/16 in. (34.9 x 24.6 cm). Date: 1588/89-1623.Consecutively active in Rome, Mantua, and Venice, Domenico Fetti is best known for his history paintings, but this drawing clearly exemplyfies his virtuosity as a fine portraitist. The intensity of the gaze of this astutely observed sitter recalls Fetti's celebrated painting, the Portrait of an Actor, in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. The highly controlled pastel technique Fetti is displaying here might have come from his master Lodovico Cigoli or might have been inspired by earlier examples by Federico Barocci and Jacopo Bassano. The attribution to Domenico Fetti goes back to the time of the French collector Pierre-Jean Mariette, whose attribution is elegantly inscribed on his signature-blue mount. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
