During a Crew Equipment Interface Test (CEIT) in the payload bay of Discovery, STS-95 Mission Specialist Stephen K. Robinson uses a tethered tool to loosen a bolt on the Canadian robot arm, the Remote Manipulator System, while Mission Specialist Pedro Duque, of the European Space Agency, watches. At right is Keith Johnson, United Space Alliance-Houston. The CEIT gives astronauts an opportunity for a hands-on look at the payloads and equipment with which they will be working on orbit. The launch of the STS-95 mission is scheduled for Oct. 29, 1998. The mission includes research payloads such as the Spartan solar-observing deployable spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker, as well as the SPACEHAB single module with experiments on space flight and the aging process

Members of NASAs Perseverance Mars rover team study data on monitors in mission control, Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. A key objective for Perseverances mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planets geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In a simulated emergency landing of a shuttle crew at NASA Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility, emergency rescue personnel aid an "astronaut" who just left the orbiter mockup. Known as a Mode VI exercise, the operation uses volunteer workers from the Center to pose as astronauts. The purpose of the simulation is to exercise emergency preparedness personnel, equipment and facilities in rescuing astronauts from a downed orbiter and providing immediate medical attention.

In preparation for the Artemis I flight test, teams at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida prepare the Matroshka AstroRad Radiation Experiment (MARE) investigation on Aug. 5, 2022. MARE will fly on Artemis I and features two manikins, called phantoms - Helga and Zohar - equipped with radiation detectors to determine the radiation risk on its way to the Moon. The phantoms will be seated as passengers in the Orion crew module, with Zohar also wearing the experimental AstroRad radiation protection vest. The MARE experiment is part of an agreement between NASA, the Israel Space Agency, and the German Aerospace Center. Artemis I will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration and demonstrate NASAs capability to extend human presence to the Moon and beyond. The primary goal of Artemis I is to thoroughly test the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecrafts integrated systems before crewed missions. Under Artemis, NASA aims to land the first woman and first person of color

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The last of the workers dressed in their SCAPE suits file into the vehicle that will take them to the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility 2 (SAEF-2) to fuel the Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) spacecraft. SCAPE refers to Self-Contained Atmospheric Protective Ensemble. CONTOUR will provide the first detailed look into the heart of a comet -- the nucleus. Flying as close as 60 miles (100 kilometers) to at least two comets, the spacecraft will take the sharpest pictures yet of a nucleus while analyzing the gas and dust that surround them. CONTOUR is scheduled for launch aboard a Boeing Delta II rocket July 1, 2002, from Launch Complex 17-A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station

In the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) bay 1, STS-103 Pilot Scott J. Kelly sits in the pilot's seat of the orbiter Discovery, inspecting the window. The mission will be Kelly's first Space Shuttle flight. Kelly and other crew members are at KSC to take part in a Crew Equipment Interface Test. The rest of the crew are Commander Curtis L. Brown Jr. and Mission Specialists Steven L. Smith, C. Michael Foale (Ph.D.), John M. Grunsfeld (Ph.D.), Claude Nicollier of Switzerland, and Jean-François Clervoy of France. Nicollier and Clervoy are with the European Space Agency. Mission STS-103 is a "call-up" due to the need to replace portions of the pointing system, the gyros, which have begun to fail on the Hubble Space Telescope. Although Hubble is operating normally and conducting its scientific observations, only three of its six gyroscopes are working properly. The gyroscopes allow the telescope to point at stars, galaxies and planets. The STS-103 crew will not only replace gyroscopes, it wi

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Vehicle Assembly Building, United Space Alliance technician Ed Carillion attaches the foam spray nozzle to the spray gun to be used for the aft hard-point closeout spray on the External Tank (ET). The spray is being applied on an area of the tank where the ET is mated to the transporter. Foam is not applied to that area at the Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana to avoid damage to the foam during travel. The ET, which arrived at KSC Jan. 5, is in the checkout cell for final processing. The tank is scheduled to fly on Space Shuttle Discovery on Return to Flight mission STS-114. The launch window is May 12 to June 3.
