Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) was the first wife of Napoleon I of France (Napoleon Bonaparte). As such, she was the first Empress of France. Her first husband was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. Her children by him married royalty. She had no children with Napoleon. This image of her is after the painting by her contemporary Baron Francois Gerard.
