Calligraphic Plaque probably late 17th century This cartouche-shaped plaque was created from a single sheet of solid steel, whose wide, flat border encloses a hemistich referring to Batul (a title associated with Fatima, The Prophet Muhammads daughter, and Imam Alis wife) and her two sons (Hasan and Husayn). The verse is from a poem extolling names of the chahardah maʿsum, or the fourteen infallible ones (the Prophet, Fatima, and the twelve imams). Such plaques were once part of a larger epigraphic ensembles that served both a decorative and invocative function. They often adorned the doors of shrines, mosques, and theological schools.. From an illuminated Ottoman dua kitabi or 'prayer book' by Hasan Rashid (Istanbul, 1845) once the property of a Topkapi harem lady. The Arabic term 'du'a' is generally translated into English as 'prayer', though a more exact rendering would be 'supplication'. The term is derived from an Arabic word meaning to 'call out' or to 'summon', and Muslims regard this as a profound act of worship. This is when Muslims connect with God and ask him for forgivness or appeal for his favour. Zardozi and Karchupi motif artisans, mainly from the Bihari community in Chittagong city, remain busy working to meet the demand in markets ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival in 2025. Traditional Zardozi and Karchupi artisans are now struggling due to the low prices of machine-made embroidery from India and other Asian countries, rising costs, and declining demand, which threaten their craft in Bangladesh.
