The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope just over 1,000 feet (305 m) across, the largest single radio telescope. The main metal collecting dish sits fixed a hemispherical karst sinkhole. Because it is fixed, a spherical reflector hangs 500 feet (150 m) over the dish on a 900 ton platform, seen here, known as 'the feed'. The observatory is the primary location of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, NAIC.

During 2019 field tests near Greenland's Summit Station, a high-elevation remote observing station, the WATSON (Wireline Analysis Tool for the Subsurface Observation of Northern ice sheets) instrument is put through its paces to seek out signs of life, or biosignatures, 360 feet (110 meters) down a borehole. In this photograph, the winch that holds the drill pokes out the top of the drill tent. WATSON could one day be launched aboard a robotic mission to seek out biosignatures on the ocean moons of Enceladus, Europa, or even Titan. The WATSON team hopes to test the instrument in a variety of cold locations on Earth to see how the distribution and variety of biosignatures change depending on where they are. By testing WATSON in different Earth analogs areas on Earth that can stand in for those on other worlds scientists would be able to better understand the chemical fingerprints of any biosignatures detected on other worlds.

Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. - A truck carrying all three stages of the Orbital Sciences Pegasus XL rocket arrives at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. NASAs Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, spacecraft will launch aboard the Pegasus XL in late 2012. IRIS will open a new window of discovery by tracing the flow of energy and plasma through the chromospheres and transition region into the suns corona using spectrometry and imaging. IRIS fills a crucial gap in our ability to advance studies of the sun-to-Earth connection by tracing the flow of energy and plasma through the foundation of the corona and heliosphere, or region around the sun.

TROPICS Rocket Launch. A Rocket Lab Electron rocket stands on Pad B, Launch Complex 1, in Māhia, New Zealand, just ahead of liftoff at 3:46 p.m. NZST Friday, May 26, with NASAs Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) CubeSats secured in the payload fairing atop the rocket. The successful launch placed the final pair of TROPICS CubeSats into orbit, completing the constellation. TROPICS will provide data on temperature, precipitation, water vapor, and clouds by measuring microwave frequencies, providing insight into storm formation and intensification.
