Two Sinhalese Soldiers, Esaias Boursss, 1662 Two men stand outside on an uneven terrain. The left man is drawn aside from the right. His torso is uncovered. He wears a Singalese way converted knee rug (veshti, lungi). From the half -length sword (Kastane), worn on his left hip, we only see the decorated hilt with Leeuwenkopje and the curled end of the sheath. He is wearing a round borderless hat. The man on the right is drawn from the front. He is wearing a closed short jacket with long sleeves and pleated lower edge (Hettaya), underneath an in a Singalese way of knee -rug (Veshti, Lungi) and a high waistband around the medicine. In his right hand he wears something that looks like a bag, and a long stick that leans against his right shoulder is probably a lance or a spear. Under his left arm, the decorated hilt protrudes from a short sword (Kastane). On his head a typical hat (or helmet): High, stiff, with a point at the front. Rajasimha II, also known as Rajasingha II was a Sinhalese king, reigned 1629 - 1687; he was the third monarch of the Kingdom of Kandy in Sri Lanka. Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the middle of the island, formerly known as Ceylon, in the midst of hills in the Kandyan plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka, and is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) one of the most venerable Buddhist sites in the world. UNESCO declared the temple a World Heritage Site in 1988.

Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) was a French naturalist and explorer who made several voyages to Southeast Asia between 1769 and 1781. He published this two-volume account of his voyage of 1774-81 in 1782. Volume 1 deals exclusively with India, whose culture Sonnerat very much admired, and is especially noteworthy for its extended discussion of religion in India, Hinduism in particular. Volume 2 covers Sonnerat's travels to China, Burma, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), Indonesia, and the Philippines. The book is illustrated with engravings based on Sonnerat's drawings. Among the most interesting illustrations are Sonnerat's pictures of various Hindu deities. Sonnerat was also a dedicated ornithologist and bird collector, and the book describes and depicts a number of species that he was the first to identify.
