The centre is located in Briançon, Frances highest town, which is part of WHOs Healthy Cities programme. At this altitude the oxygen partial pressure is reduced which has a positive effect on the cardio-vascular system. The concentration of allergens is also reduced. Briançon is one of the top places for high-altitude climate therapy due to its hours of sunlight, almost total lack of fog, its very low hygrometry, its almost total lack of dust mites, the scarcity of damp, its short pollen season and a very low levels of pollution. Karim, 10, suffers from asthma and comes from the Paris region. He arrived at the Jeunes Pousses this year. An exertion rehabilitation programme is offered to the young patients, run by the physiotherapist and sports educators.

Colombias drawn-out battle between government forces, Marxist guerrillas and right-wing paramilitary groups has led to the worlds second-highest fatality rate from land mines, after Afghanistan. In recent years, it has only gotten worse. The Colombian government says that more than 11,000 people have been injured or killed by land mines in the country since 1990, with more than 2,000 victims in the last five years alone and more than 50 this year.
