The Triumph of Eternity, Dirck Vellert, 1517 Round, stained glass window with the representation of the triumph of eternity. A classic triumph cart drives against a background of a mountainous landscape with a city. On the cart, on a rectangular pedestal, God the Father, adorned with miter. He supports the dead body of his son Christ on his lap. A pigeon flies behind him, the Holy Spirit. They form the holy trinity, which symbolizes eternity. A trumpet -blowing angel squats on both sides of the throne. The cart is preceded by the attributes of the four evangelists: the angel of Mattheus, the lion of Marcus, the bull of Lucas and the eagle of John. They depict the New Testament. Plaque with Christ Receiving Magdeburg Cathedral from Emperor Otto I. Culture: Ottonian. Dimensions: Overall: 5 1/8 x 4 7/16 x 5/16in. (13 x 11.3 x 0.8cm). Date: ca. 962-968.One of the most famous ivory carvings to survive from the tenth century, this plaque depicts Christ enthroned against an open worked checkerboard background. He is blessing a model of a church presented to him by Emperor Otto the Great (r. 962-973) and a host of saints including Peter, who holds his attribute, the keys. The ivory was destined for Otto's imperial church dedicated to Saint Mauritius in Magdeburg (Saxony) which was raised to the seat of an archbishopric in 968. This plaque, and an accompanying series of New Testament and symbolic scenes, must have been made for the dedication of the church in that year. This ensemble may have been part of some liturgical furnishing such as a chancel door, a pulpit, or an altar frontal. Date: ca. 1170.This piece, from the medieval game of tables (a precursor to backgammon), illustrates the Late Antique legend of Apollonius of Tyre, whose wife was miraculously resurrected after being buried at sea. Here two men lower her coffin while two others watch. The scene is conceived in spatial layers: coffin, figures lowering it, onlookers, and sail. The illusion of deep space is enhanced by almost three-dimensional carving, with some areas in the round, a rare feature in walrus-ivory reliefs. While the subject is unique in Romanesque art, the plastic style of figure carving and the fine detail have parallels in Cologne ivories of the second half of the twelfth century. The base is carved in low relief on top with four bats surrounding a stylized Chinese character shou or longevity. In ancient China, craftsmen often used word-puns and loaded homonyms in creating their works of art. The rebus in this context is the combination of a spoken word and a visual image, whose name is pronounced in the same fashion as an auspicious term. The images in this sculpture, the lion shi and the bat fu, are homophones for power and good fortune. Altogether, the design of this sculpture implies an auspicious message: a wish for 'official advancement', 'good fortune' and 'longevity'.
