The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated world history. Its structure follows the story of human history as related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is one of the best-documented early printed books - an incunabulum (printed, not hand-written) - and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text.

King David the Poet 1863 Figure designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones British This panel of King David, with three other panels also decorated with figures of poets (Homer, Chaucer, and Dante), was made for windows in the breakfast room at Silsden, a house in Yorkshire built for textile manufacturer Charles Hastings. This was one of the first commissions given to Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., the firm that William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and others had co-founded in 1861 to revive the arts and crafts of the pre-Renaissance era (which would subsequently develop into the more successful Morris & Co in 1875). (47.6 x 34.6 cm); painted surface 18 1/2 x 13 1/4 in. (47 x 33.7 cm). Date: ca. 1435.This panel is part of a cycle of scenes depicting the life of the hermit Saint Anthony Abbot. The painter's penchant for original and descriptive narrative detail appears in the treatment of the desert landscape and its fauna (symbols of the saint's temptations) beneath the luminous sky at dusk. A pot of gold in the lower left corner (which has been scraped away) symbolized the seductive worldly goods that the stalwart saint resists. The series of eight panels were likely arranged vertically, surrounding a central painted or sculpted image of Saint Anthony. This window, completed the year before La Farge's death, was one of his most complex works. Commissioned in 1908 by Mrs. George T. Bliss for her house at 9 East Sixty-Eighth Street in New York City, it features a young woman in classical garb welcoming visitors while drawing back a portiere--a replication in glass of a Chinese embroidered textile originally owned by the Bliss family. Saint Michael and a Donor late 15th century French Bashford Dean (1867-1928), founding curator of the Department of Arms and Armor, frequently acquired works of art, which he called documents, if they included interesting depictions of armor and weapons, particularly rare or early types. Stephen V. Grancsay (1897-1980), Deans successor, followed the same practice, adding paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and stained glass to the collection. This stained glass panel features Saint Michael in armor and was on display in the galleries of the Department of Arms and Armor for many years. Granscay explained the rationale for doing this, in reference to medieval armor, in an article published in 1928: "Contemporary representations often show more detail than extant armor, which has been injured by rust and the loss of elements.
