The Holy Family in an Enclosed Garden 1512 Albrecht Dürer German This drawing is a variation on a popular fifteenth-century theme in which the Madonna is portrayed seated in a rose garden or on a grassy bank. The arbor suggests the enclosed garden, or hortus conclusus, a visual metaphor for Marys virginity. Durers working technique - lightly sketched outlines, areas of parallel hatching to differentiate light and shadow, and little attempt at three-dimensionality - exemplifies his graphic production during the second decade of the fifteenth century.. A Quartet of Singers, Lute players, and Bell Ringers Playing in a Tavern by Candlelight mid to late 17th century Leonaert Bramer This sheet is one of eighty brush drawings on blue paper by the prolific draftsman and painter Leonaert Bramer that belonged to an album that was disbanded and dispersed in the 1980s. The album is known as the Hofstede de Groot album as it belonged to the eminent Dutch art historian Cornelis Hofstede de Groot around 1930. The drawings in this album are among Bramer's earliest known drawings and some of them may have been created on his early trip to Italy (1619-1627). The drawings, diverse subjects from genre to mythology, to religious scenes, were all rendered within rectangular frames drawn on the larger sheet. Studies of a Man's Head and of His Hands. Artist: Federico Barocci (Italian, Urbino ca. 1535-1612 Urbino). Dimensions: 11 x 16-1/4 in. (28 x 41.3 cm). Date: 1592-99.These large studies of heads and hands, broadly modeled in colored chalks, were preparatory for the figure of an apostle seated at the table near Christ in Barocci's monumental canvas The Last Supper. The painting was an important commission by Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, Duke of Urbino and Pesaro, and was executed by Barocci between 1592 and 1599 for the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament in the Urbino Cathedral, where it still hangs. Here, the use of black, white, and peach chalks on blue paper and the sculptural quality of the forms are typical of the artist, who was among the most prolific draftsmen of all time. The Last Supper was one of Barocci's last paintings, for which he produced more than fifty drawings, a fact that attests to the meticulous care of his creative process.
