Virgin and Child Enthroned ca. 1600 Manner of Christoph Angermair German The elongated Mannerist proportions and the Christ Child's coiffure reveal a debt to the style brought from Italy by the Munich court sculptors Hubert Gerhard and Hans Reichl. Although they both worked primarily in bronze, they influenced the noted ivory carver Christoph Angermair, who specialized in small-scale carvings for the Kunstkammern of wealthy princes and merchants. Beginning in 1613 Angermair served as court sculptor to Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria, himself a proficient ivory turner.. Virgin and Child Enthroned 195123

Zao Gongen. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 30 in. (76.2 cm); W. 24 in. (61 cm). Date: 14th century. This boyish figure of ferocious mien is carved of a single block of Japanese cedar (sugi), but for its separately carved limbs. His right foot is raised in a bounding leap as he brandishes a now-missing vajra in his raised right fist. He wears the Hindu dhoti, a long cloth wrapped around the waist and between the legs that, like the long scarf draped over the left shoulder, flutters with the figure's energetic movement. His hair sweeps back in flamelike tufts to frame the face. The powerful expression, with brow bulging and mouth open in a roar, is made riveting by inset crystal eyes, including a third in the center of the brow, that are painted and touched with red to appear bloodshot. Zao Gongen is the protective spirit of Mount Kimpu in the lovely Yoshino range south of Nara. Female bust 1725-50 French Since the figure is looking down, she may have been intended for the cresting of a tall armoire or bookcase. Bearing resemblance to the elegant ladies in the paintings of Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), this large mount would not only add sculptural beauty but also a considerable cost and weight to a piece of furniture. Especially when combined with other mounts, the cabinetmaker had to take this additional weight into account when constructing the carcass. The large holes in the bust are for screws or nails to fasten it to the wooden surface. It was only later during the eighteenth century that less conspicuous ways for mounting were devised.. Sculpture of an Enthroned King ca. 1230-35 North Italian Portraying a historical king, such as Solomon, or an allegorical image of the monarch as the living law” (lex animata), this imposing sculpture must have originated from an important northern Italian civic monument. It is a rare surviving example of the image of a ruler from a civic setting, such as a court of justice or a city gate, and is stylistically related to the work of the influential northern Italian sculptor Benedetto Antelami (act. ca. 1175-1215). It also shows an understanding of French models, especially with respect to the facial features and the thin drapery folds of the mantle. Filatrice 1850 Henry Kirke Brown American In the late 1840s Americans began to perfect the process of casting sculpture in bronze. As a result, small statuettes, modeled and, finally, cast in this country, were heralded as an affordable and democratic art form that symbolized independence from European materials and foundries. In 1849 the American Art-Union began distributing bronze sculptures to its subscribers in an annual lottery. Twenty examples of Filatrice (Italian for spinner”), cast in Brown’s own Brooklyn foundry, were commissioned for that purpose.. Filatrice. Date: probably shortly before 1704.Finely detailed armor, a fluttering jabot, and an extravagantly combed wig set off the smoothly burnished face of the military commander portrayed in this wooden bust.
