Views of the baroque interior (17th century) include an ornate wooden ceiling with the Papal coat-of-arms in the center, an organ, and an altarpiece with angels. Most views are of intarsia choirstalls (1483-1513) and the frescoes of the story of St. John the Evangelist (or St. Joseph) by the Salimbeni brothers. François-Nicolas Chifflart was an important member of the etching revival in 19th-century France. This print, from his 1865 series Improvisations on Copper, reveals the freedom and experimentation that Chifflart found in this medium. He drew directly on prepared copper plates, sketching as he would on a sheet of paper, to create both anecdotal studies and imaginative finished compositions. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of this Benedictine Abbey in the woods focus on the 13th-century cloister arcades and 14th-century blind arcade, comprised of colonnettes of different styles. Cloister views also include a well-head; and on the east cloister wall are heraldic devices among which figure a pair of lions, a cross, and crossed keys. Interior views focus on fresco fragments, including a depiction of the Last Supper with baroque columns. JEANNE HACHETTE.Charles the Bold of Burgundy invaded France, slew all the inhabitants of the first town which resisted him, and then besieged Beauvais, expecting surrender or an easy victory. Its terrified citizens were, however, rallied by this Jeanne, who, carrying the hatchet which has given her its name, led even the women to defend the walls. With stones, boiling water, or whatever came to hand, they repulsed the Burgundians, and Jeanne captured the enemy's standard. This desperate defense drove the foe from France. Jeanne Laisne was a French heroine known as Jeanne Fourquet and nicknamed Jeanne Hachette. She was the daughter of a peasant. She is currently known for an act of heroism on 27 June 1472, when she prevented the capture of Beauvais by the troops of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy.

Date: ca. 1660.In the fourth state of this print, Rembrandt completely transformed the plate by scraping away large portions of the original composition (see also the second state, 41.1.31), some of which are still visible underneath the hatching. He covered the sky with strong parallel lines that veil the remaining figures on both sides, and he redrew Christ's face to show his mouth open and his eyes half-closed. These changes actually alter the subject of the print: instead of showing the centurion's conversion after Christ's death, the image now focuses on the figure of Christ in the final moments of life, as he cries, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me" (Matthew 27:46). Exterior views are of the apse, an original bell tower and a medieval relief sculpture. Views of the vast baroque interior with its barrel-vaulted ceiling and numerous candelabra focus on the Cappella di S. Catervo--its frescoes and sarcophagus of S. Catervo and S.
