Rather than using a fresh canvas, he painted the nude on top of another figure study, which is partially visible underneath. The toes and foot of the earlier figure—possibly the same model—may be seen in the lower left corner, just below the male nudes head, while his bearded face appears in the area of the reclining nudes foot.. The Dead Christ with Angels 1864 Edouard Manet French Manet identified the source for this painting, the first of several religious scenes, in the inscription on the rock: the Gospel according to Saint John. However, in the passage cited, Christs tomb is empty except for two angels. After Manet sent the canvas to the 1864 Salon, he realized that he had made an even greater departure from the text, depicting Christs wound on the wrong side. Despite Charles Baudelaires warning that he would "give the malicious something to laugh at," the artist did not correct his mistake. Begun by Filippino Lippi in 1502, it was completed after his death by Perugino. The altarpiece had the form of a Roman triumphal arch, with large scenes flanked by Peruginos standing saints, which are notable for the subdued coloring and subtle treatment of light.
