Date: n.d..This is one of the most finished and pictorial drawings by Hans Krumpper, who, at the Munich court of William V, Duke of Bavaria, was mainly active as a sculptor. In a lush landscape and surrounded by birds in the tree, the sky and on the river, the Holy Family shares an intimate moment with the young Saint John the Baptist carrying a lamb. A comparable drawing, representing the Virgin combing the Christ Child's hair in the presence of two angels, is at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg (inv. 23678b). Monogrammed drawings displaying the same figure style - with plump features, round eyes, high foreheads, and curly hair - are found among those from the artist's estate at the Münchner Stadmuseum, Munich (inv. 36/1892, 36/1893). The chapel was built in 1746-50 based on designs by Germain Boffrand, but destroyed in the 19th century. The main altar depicted The Adoration of the Magi and subsidiary scenes included the children and nuns of the orphanage as onlookers. Natoire's scenes were set into trompe l'oeil surrounds painted by Paolo Antonio and Gaetano Brunetti, giving the illusion that the viewer was standing in a ruined building. Man and Woman Striding Toward the Left early 16th century Circle of Giovanni Francesco Caroto The Caroto brothers were prominent painters in Verona in the first half of the sixteenth century, though drawings attributed to them are quite rare. This example, which shows similarities to their work, was likely executed by a contemporary Veronese artist influenced by them. The carefully drawn sheet bears tiny pricked holes, especially visible in the drapery and feet of the male figure, used to transfer the design to another surface. It is likely a study for a painted work; the left part of the larger composition is hinted at in the drawing. The subject is unclear, though it would seem to be of a religious nature. The figures depicted here may represent supplicants. The voluminous drapery folds combined with the grisaille (gray tones) palette, create a strong sculptural effect..
