(57.8 x 46.4 cm); painted surface 21 1/4 x 16 3/4 in. (54 x 42.5 cm). Date: possibly ca. 1380.A princess of great learning and beauty, Saint Catherine of Alexandria (fourth century) was challenged to a debate with fifty pagan orators, all of whom she converted to Christianity. Here she counts off the points of her dispute to two men who wear haloes as an indication of their conversion by her arguments (and future martyrdom by Emperor Maxentius). Like his father, in whose workshop he may have been trained, Francesco is known primarily as a painter of altarpieces and frescoes. Although executed on parchment, this work was not part of a manuscript but conceived as an independent devotional object. It is essentially a reduced version of the painted altarpieces produced by the artist for the principal churches in Verona and the surrounding region. Saint Catherine of Siena Beseeching Christ to Resuscitate Her Mother ca. 1447-65 Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian This panel along with another in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.34) belong to a narrative cycle depicting scenes from the life of Catherine of Siena, a fourteenth-century Dominican saint, who was a minister to the poor as well as a mystic. The panels, based on a biography of Saint Catherine written in 1385 by her confessor Raymond of Capua, represent the first complete pictorial cycle of her life. This series, which also includes three panels in European Paintings (1997.117.2; 1997.117.3, 32.100.95), may have been produced following Saint Catherines canonization in 1461 and added as a predella (base) to a preexisting altarpiece. Two additional panels portraying standing male figures in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.55, 1975.1.56), also belonged to the same complex, which may have been commissioned by the guild of the Pizzicaiuoli (purveyors of dry goo

The Translation of the Holy House of Loreto ca. 1490 Attributed to Saturnino Gatti Italian According to legend, in 1291 the Virgin Mary's house was miraculously transported by angels from the Holy Land after the Muslim defeat of the Crusaders. The house settled first in Dalmatia and then, in 1294, came to rest at Loreto, on the Adriatic coast of Italy, and became a place of pilgrimage. Here it is borne across the Adriatic, under the watch of its former occupants. The leading painter in the region of the Abruzzi, Saturnino painted this charming work in about 1490..
