Palestine is a name given to the geographic region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. The region is also known as the Land of Israel, the Holy Land and the Southern Levant. In 1832 Palestine was conquered by Muhammad Ali's Egypt, but in 1840 Britain intervened and returned control of the Levant to the Ottomans in return for further capitulations. The end of the 19th century saw the beginning of Zionist immigration and the Revival of the Hebrew language. The movement was publicly supported by Great Britain during World War I with the Balfour Declaration of 1917. The British captured Jerusalem a month later, and were formally awarded a mandate in 1922. In 1947, following World War II and the Holocaust, the British Government announced their desire to terminate the Mandate, and the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition the territory into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Syrian Jews are Jews who inhabit the region of the modern state of Syria, and their descendants born outside Syria. Syrian Jews derive their origin from two groups: from the Jews who inhabited the region of today's Syria from ancient times (known as Musta'arabi Jews, and sometimes classified as Mizrahi Jews, a generic term for the Jews with an extended history in the Middle East or North Africa); and from the Sephardi Jews (referring to Jews with an extended history in the Iberian Peninsula, i.e. Spain and Portugal) who fled to Syria after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain (1492 CE). There were large communities in Aleppo and Damascus for centuries, and a smaller community in Qamishli on the Turkish border near Nusaybin. In the first half of the 20th century a large percentage of Syrian Jews emigrated to the U.S., Central and South America and Israel. Most of the remaining Jews left in the 28 years following 1973. Today there are about 25 Jews in Syria, all of them living in Damascu

Lazarus and the rich man. The rich man and the poor Lazarus. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus represented in three scenes in an interior. In the middle the rich man on a meal, the beggar is driven away at the door. Left the rich man dies and his soul gets through devils, right Lazarus resting in the shot of Abraham in heaven. The canvas is part of a series of parables painted for the Lutheran church in Leiden (see also NRS. SK-A-2958 and SK-A-2959).

Portrait of Philippus Baldaeus and Gerrit Mossopotam. Philippus Baldaeus was active as a minister for the VOC on Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1654 to 1665. Back in the Netherlands, he had this picture painted to commemorate his years of service overseas. The seated Baldaeus wears clothing he brought with him from Asia. He is probably joined here by Gerrit Mossopotam, who resided with Baldaeus in the Netherlands and mayhave assisted him in translating Christian texts.

While Mathieuson and his wife dress in the demure Protestant Dutch style of the times, their overdressed slave holds a parasol, or 'pajong', above them. With his cane, the merchant indicates a fleet of ships belonging to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the background lies the partially walled city of Batavia, the hub of the VOCs operations in Asia. The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was a chartered company granted a monopoly by the Dutch government to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, coin money and establish colonies. The VOC was set up in 1602 to gain a foothold in the East Indies (Indonesia) for the Dutch in the lucrative spice trade, which until that point was dominated by the Portuguese. Between
