With arms opened wide and hands upraised in a gesture of humility, Jesus begins his prayer with an acknowledgment of Gods power in heaven and on earth. (Tissot places Jesus between the color-streaked sky and the ground on which his disciples sit, further signifying Jesus place between the human and the divine.) Complementing the narrative of the venerations by the humble shepherds, the Magi, guided by a moving star, traveled separately from their individual lands in the east in search of the newborn Jesus. Tissot depicts the Magi at the moment when their retinues meet in the vast, arid landscape of the volcanic hills on the shores of the Dead Sea between Jericho, the Kedron Valley, and Jerusalem. In his commentary, the artist notes that their flowing saffron robesa luxurious counterpoint to the simple woolens of the shepherds signal their status as astronomers. After Oedipus blinded himself, having discovered the truth about his parentage and his marriage, he left Thebes. Antigone went with him, along with her sister Ismene, and stayed with him until his death. She then returned to Thebes. As time passed at Golgotha, the sky grew darker, frightening away many of the observers but permitting those in Jesus immediate circle, who had initially kept themselves at a safe distance, to approach, and even to touch his feet. Mary Magdalene hugs the cross. Jesus further shows his acceptance of those rejected by society by inviting Matthewa publican, or toll collectorinto his ministry, as he passes his booth. Not only were these tax collectors considered unscrupulous, but they were also particularly loathed by devout Jews for their status as representatives of the ruling Romans. Tissot has included camels and the hint of a wide-arched gate to underscore Matthew’s location at a geographical (and perhaps, spiritual) crossroads, as well as adding an Eastern flourish. After Christ calls Matthew to his teachings, he takes a meal in the home of his new disciple, an act that occasions the suspicion of devout passersby. The caption reads: Pray give me your hand so that I may see your ring. According to the tale: A rich man sent his son to trade, three times. The son used his money to help less fortunate, including a tsar's daughter. The two fell in love and married. Later, fathers minister threw him overboard. Landing on a barren island, he is helped in return for half of whatever he would have. Seeing his wife, about to marry the minister, he puts out his hand, with his wedding ring (see here). The boy gives the man his half. The man says he is an angel, rewarding him for his good deeds and vanishes.
