Cutting from an Antiphonary: Initial Aspiciens a longe: The Tree of Jesse, c. 1115-1125. Germany, Meuse Valley, 12th century. Ink, tempera, and gold on vellum; sheet: 18 x 16 cm (7 1/16 x 6 5/16 in.). This complex initial "A" is formed of meandering plant tendrils, neatly and symmetrically placed at the center of a succession of square frames to which the letter is securely attached above and below. The whole forms a Tree of Jesse showing Christ's ancestors beginning with King David (bottom). The text would have begun, "Long have I been watching...." These are the words of Isaiah, who foresaw the coming of Christ. Isaiah's prophecies are the basis for the representations of the Tree of Jesse, often seen in medieval art.

In the upper and lower left corners are the cropped figures of two Benedictine monks. This initial was removed from a now-lost psalter (a book of psalms) produced for the monks of the Benedictine abbey of Florence, the Badia Fiorentina. Virgin and Child with Four Saints, c. 1500. Germany or Switzerland, Upper Rhine. Tapestry weave: linen warp, wool and silk wefts; overall: 79.7 x 155.8 cm (31 3/8 x 61 5/16 in.). The Virgin and Child appear with Saints Catherine, John the Evangelist, Jodocus, and Mary Magdalene. Symbols of the Virgins purity and of Christs death and redemptive mission are included in the scene: the wall, lilies, fruit tree, and the palm tree on a hill. The saints wear costumes fashionable around 1475 to 1480 and are arranged in a row across the foreground, characteristic of the late 15th-century tapestries from Nuremberg.

Offerings to the Goddess Palden Lhamo. Culture: Tibet. Dimensions: 67 × 44 1/8 in. (170.2 × 112 cm)Framed: 77 3/8 × 55 5/8 × 7/8 in. (196.5 × 141.3 × 2.2 cm). Date: late 16th century.Palden Lhamo is the principal protectress of Tibet and the only female of the Eight Guardians of the dharma. This black-ground (Tibetan: nag thang) painting was installed in the chapel (gonkhang) dedicated to the wrathful protective deities (dharmapalas), a room reserved for tantric initiation rites within a Tibetan monastery. The exceptional scale and complexity of the composition relate the painting to the offering-scene murals known as "sets of ornaments" (Tibetan: rgyan tshogs) that adorn the interiors of shrines dedicated to the dharmapalas. Date: mid-16th century.This feather mosaic triptych from 16th-century Mexico is one of just three that survive. It was created by indigenous featherworkers who adapted the pre-Hispanic technique to Christian use. An altar card, it pictures the Last Supper as the first Mass. The Latin text beneath the image begins: "For this is my body. For this is the chalice of my blood." Feather mosaics were highly prized by Europeans for their exotic origin and appearance. The present work, which can be traced to a Florentine collection, was among the "objects of curious pictorial art" given to the Museum in 1888 by a Manhattan law firm. Date: ca 1600.The Virgin Mary and infant Jesus, seated on a floral carpet, are honored with an offering of a plate of fruit, visible in the foreground, consistent with the Hindu devotional practice of prasad (offering). They are attended by three angels, one bearing a gold censer and another with a Chinese-style blue-and-white porcelain bowl decorated with geese. Their feathery bodies and faces resemble those of the peris, or fairies, of Indo-Islamic painting. This hybridity of style and cultural reference is a hallmark of Mughal painting at the turn of the sixteenth century, when European influences in subject matter and technique were being absorbed by court artists such as Manohar. This illuminated page in Javanese script is from a chronicle of a Javanese court in Yogyakarta. Located in central Java, Yogyakarta was one of two main pre-colonial royal cities in Java and a center of Javanese culture. The history of local leaders and royal families was recorded in chronicles such as this one. Yogyakarta is renowned as a centre of classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. It is also famous as a centre for Indonesian higher education and the seat of Gadjah Mada University, one of the three most prestigious universities in Indonesia. Yogyakarta was the Indonesian capital during the Indonesian National Revolution from 1945 to 1949.

This small but fine panel, which likely decorated the front of a private altar, presents the Crucifixion of Jesus witnessed by Saint John, the Virgin, and saints James the Greater (with a satchel), Peter (with a key), Paul (with a sword), and Andrew (with an X-shaped cross). Reading from left to right, the coats of arms are those of Hastings, Fitz-Alan, England, Castile-Léon, DeClare, and DeVere. The placement of the arms of King Edward I (r. 1272-1307) and his queen, Eleanor of Castile, date the embroidery to between Edwards ascension in 1272 and Eleanors death in 1290.. The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais) (Dublin, Trinity College Library, MS A. I. (58), sometimes known as the Book of Columba) is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity.
