Emperor Vespasian Cured by Veronica's Veil ca. 1510 Flemish, Brussels This tapestry illustrates the legend of Veronicas veil, an episode from a twelfth-century French epic poem, La Vengeance de Nostre Seigneur (The Vengeance of Our Lord), an amalgam of apocryphal sources from the first century which tell of the Roman Emperor Vespasians campaigns in Jerusalem. The poem was popularized in the fourteenth century as the subject of mystery plays. Portrayed at center, Veronica has been brought to the Emperor Vespasian, who kneels before her, in order to cure him of his illness. Veronica holds the cloth with which she had wiped perspiration from Christs face as he carried the cross on the road to Calvary. Christs image was transferred to the cloth along with his miraculous healing powers. Undoubtedly woven by the finest weavers, it is remarkable that this tapestry escaped the French Revolution when a vast number of tapestries containing gilt or silvered threads were melted down and destro

Maria-message, in architectural frame, anonymous (circle of), c. 1325 - c. 1350 Maria message in a portal-like frame. In a gothic surrounding, in the form of a church portal there is in high relief the Mary message with the kneeling angel on the left, almost entirely from the side and on the right the standing H. Virgin. She holds a book in her left hand, the other is levied. The angel has a spell band in the left hand and points to the text with the other. The surrounding consists of a Wimberg, closed up by two sloping profiled frames with highs and at the bottom by an arch with a toothed edge. The Wimberg is flanked by two cross -placed side pieces that carry above pinnacles and rest on a profiled base. The Wimberg that is crowned by a stylized flower has a framed medallion in the middle in which God the Father and where two angels are painted in addition to two angels. Date: ca. 1390-1405.The entombment of Christ after the Crucifixion is variously described in the Four Gospels. Each of the accounts notes the presence of a wealthy man at the scene, Joseph of Arimathea; with him, according to Matthew and Mark, were Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James. However, only the Gospel of Saint John refers to Nicodemus, a Pharisee, as being in attendance. None of the Gospels describes the crowd of mourners gathered at the bier, as seen here, but the depiction of such a group is typical in French art of the Gothic period.About 1400, the technique of enameling en ronde-bosse, which was used for this plaque, became a hallmark of goldsmiths' work for the French royal court. Plaque with the Crucifixion 1200-1250 Limoges. This plaque was probably once part of a casket or tabernacle. It was produced by the specialized workshops for enamel objects in Limoges, France. Here Christ on the cross is flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The Christís central importance is signaled by his larger size and by the fact that his is the only figure fully modeled in the round rather than engraved into the copper support. The imagery on tabernacles that survive intact (notably in the MusÈe du Louvre, Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) suggests that plaque would have originally been surmounted by another depicting the Ascension of Christ into heaven..
