Date: ca. 1450-1500.Paschal candlesticks figure prominently in the liturgy of the Easter vigil as part of the celebration of the Resurrection. In a practice that dates to the early church, the congregation gathers around the candlestick while the deacon inserts grains of incense into five holes in the wax of the candle arranged in a cruciform pattern. The ceremony, known as Lumen Christi, concludes with the lighting of the paschal candle, which is raised above the congregants--in the case of this example, more than six feet above them. The decoration of the hexagonal candlestick is organized in three tiers. The upper register is devoted to the Old Testament: Adam and Eve, the Expulsion of Adam and Eve (depicted on two faces), and the prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Zachariah. This photo was taken inside the Roman Catholic basilica in Rome known as St. Peter in Chains (San Pietro in Vincoli). Here is where Michelangelo's statue of Moses is as part of Pope Julius II's tomb. It was built on older foundations dating to A.D. 400s to house the chains (seen here) that were used on the Apostle Peter when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem.They are kept here in a reliquary beneath the main altar of the basilica.

The Mahayana Buddhist text articulates the impermanence of all phenomena, including the notion of selfhood. Personifying this transcendent wisdom is the multiarmed goddess Prajnaparamita, the mother of all Buddhas, shown at center; she is seated in a grand throne, lifted by a half-man, half-bird kinnara. The goddess holds a book in her upper-left hand and a vajra (the ritual implement that signifies awakening) in her upper-right hand. She gestures reassurance with her front- right hand and meditation with her front-left hand. Even in miniature, the deity exudes a calm awareness and noble cultivation. Kiyevskaya is a station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line of the Moscow Metro. Opened in 1953, it is lavishly decorated in the quasi-baroque style that predominated in the early 1950s. The square pylons are faced with white Ural marble and elaborately patterned ceramic tile and the plastered ceiling is decorated with a series of frescoes by various artists depicting life in Ukraine. A large mosaic at the end of the platform commemorates the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Russia and Ukraine. The architects were L. V. Lile, V. A. Litvinov, M. F. Markovsky, and V. M. Dobrokovsky.
