Penitent Magdelene, c. 1650-65, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Spanish, 1618-1682, 48 1/2 x 42 1/2 in. (123.2 x 108.0 cm), Oil on canvas, Spain, 17th century, Tradition holds that Saint Mary Magdalene, a close follower of Jesus Christ, retreated to a cave in penitence during the final years of her life. Here, she clutches her purple robes and looks up at the bright divine light that falls upon her. Two attributes, or identifying symbols, of the saint are displayed on the rock next to her: the skull, a reminder of the inevitability of death, and the cross, a symbol of her personal devotion to Christ and his teachings.

Fragment from Christ Carrying the Cross Saint John the Evangelist 1500-1505 Provence. These two fragments are all that remain of a painting of Christ carrying the Cross by Jean Hey, the leading painter working in France at the end of the 15th century. Saint John the Evangelist was acquired by the Chicago collector Martin Ryerson in the 1890s; Mourning Virgin, recently identified as a fragment of the same work, was acquired in 2004. Technical examination showed traces of the cross and the head of Christ on both fragments and also provided evidence to connect them to another panel in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, depicting a saint and donor. These fragments were thus formerly part of an intensely emotional image of Christís road to Calvary, which would have formed the left half of a diptych, or portable folding altarpiece, with the representation of the donor in prayer on the right.. Oil on panel . Jean Hey, (the Master of Moulins)

Saint Mark (Saint Marc) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). Saint Mark (Saint Marc), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 6 x 4 5/8 in. (15.2 x 11.7 cm). For his narrative of the life of Christ, Tissot created a harmony” of the Gospels, combining the separate accounts of Jesus’ life attributed to the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four New Testament texts differ from one another in theological emphasis and tone. A harmony, a literary form traced to the second-century Christian writer Tatian, seeks to reconcile the differences among the four Gospels and to piece together one continuous chronology of Jesus’ life, verse by verse. Tissot created his own distinctive narrative through this synthesizing process, producing five chapters” derived from the Gospel sources: the Holy Childhood, the Ministry, Holy Week, the Passion, and the Resurrection. He paid homage to the individual Gospel writers by painting a portrait of each. Very occasionally,
