Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram Shah Jahan I (1592 -1666), or Shah Jahan, from the Persian meaning 'king of the world', was the fifth Mughal ruler in India and a favourite of his legendary grandfather Akbar the Great. He is best known for commissioning the 'Phadshahnamah' as a chronicle of his reign, and for the building of the Taj Mahal in Agra as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Under Shah Jahan, the Mughal Empire attained its highest union of strength and magnificence. The opulence of Shah Jahan's court and his famous Peacock Throne was the wonder of all the European travelers and ambassadors. His political efforts encouraged the emergence of large centers of commerce and crafts such as Lahore, Delhi, Agra and Ahmedabad linked by roads and waterways to distant places and ports. He moved the capital from Agra to Delhi. Under Shah Jahan's rule, the Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Delhi were built, the Shalimar Gardens of Lahore, sections of the Lahore Fort and his father's mausoleum.

St Jerome and St Catherine of Alexandria, anonymous, anonymous, c. 1480 - c. 1490 painting The Hl. Hieronymus and the HL. Catharina are sitting on a sod that is protected from the landscape underlying by a rose hedge. Hieronymus is accompanied by his symbol animal, the lion, whose leg he has drawn a thorn. At Catharina's feet is a smoldering, broken wooden wheel, and next to her a long sword leans both symbols of her martyrdom. The king's daughter Catharina was considered a role model for rich, courtly women, and as such she is also portrayed here. To the fashion of that time, she has a high shaved forehead, and has been presented in a fiered covered with fur. The entire scéne is framed by a gilded arcade with Maaswerk. In the background, a wide landscape is depicted with a few late Gothic buildings, a pond with two swans and in the distance the contours of a city with high mountains behind it. King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba' by Konrad Witz, 1435. In this panel from the Heilspiegel Altarpiece, Witz painted a gold background with filigree ornamentation and placed both his figures before it. The blue, red, green, and white of the clothing and the restrained ochre of the hands and faces may be the only colours, but they radiate light when set against the intense gold of the background, whose effect is increased still further by the elaborate inlay pattern. Witz recognized that an abstract gold background sharpened the contours of a form and made it almost tangible. From the collection of the Staatliche Museen, Berlin, Germany.
