Polyptych with Scenes from Christ's Passion ca. 1350 French or German Some private devotional objects were intended to encourage meditation on the events of the Passion in great detail, cultivating a feeling of personal presence. Narrative carvings may have aided in such intense visualization. This particular choice of scenes is striking in its attention to Pontius Pilate, its depiction of both the raising of the cross and Jesus nailed to the cross, and its inclusion of the rare episode of the stripping and buffeting of Christ. Stele Commissioned by Helian Ziyue () and a Devotional Society of Five Hundred Individuals dated 533-43 China A decisive episode from the Sutra on the Discourse of Vimalakirti is given dramatic and complex treatment on the upper half of this stele. The scene (a debate) takes place in a windblown landscape, as indicated by the trees at center and in the background. Vimalakirti (Weimo) sits in a curtained and tasseled pavilion at right, attended by fourteen figures; Manjushri (Wenshu) is accompanied by thirty attendants. Standing to either side of the two trees at center are the monk Shariputra and a female figure, who together represent the scene's most dramatic moment:Shariputra transforms himself into a woman and then changes back to his original form to demonstrate the impermanence and irrelevance of gender or any other state of being—one of the main points of the sutra. This is also one of the many moments in which the learned Vimalakirti trounces the Bodhisattva of Wisdom.Above

Christ's Descent Into Limbo, from the Soest Altarpiece. Christ, whose head is missing, is slightly diagonally to the left on the back of a hopored, crawling monster with opened mush, from which the thick tongue hangs. He holds the right hand (for the vane), the left against Adam's arm, which steps out of a sparkon, followed by Eve in praying attitude. Adam has hit his right arm around Eva and keeps the left hand for the shame. Behind them a man, from whom only head and shoulders are visible. Before Eve, a monster crawls out of the ground, which turned out to be a malfunction. Christ carries a cloak closed with an Agrafe, which is lifted by the high-held right arm so that the wound can be seen in the side; A clock slip is beaten over the left arm. Behind Christ the door of the pre-borne.

Sarcophagus Lid with Last Judgement late 3rd-early 4th century () Roman One of the earliest translations of biblical verse into image appears on the front of this sarcophagus lid. Christ, bearded and wearing a pallium (mantle), welcomes eight sheep to his right with a warm gaze and gentle pat, and with a raised hand he rejects the five goats to his left. The composition evokes the Gospel parable of Christ during the Last Judgment "separat[ing people.. as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats" (Matt. 25:31-46). The scroll bundle and costume that present Christ as a philosopher imbue him with learned authority. At this time, integrating bucolic and classical philosopher imagery was popular, so the workshop that carved this scene could have arranged similar figures differently for the decoration of non-Christian sarcophagi..
