Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, Hundreds of students from Grosse Pointe South High School and members of the community protested the anti-gay message of members of the Westboro (Kansas) Baptist Church who picketed the school carrying signs reading ""God Hates Fags."" The school was producing a play called ""The Laramie Project"" about the 1998 torture and beating death of Matt Shepard, an openly gay college student, in Laramie, Wyoming. Westboro church members believe God is punishing America because of its tolerance of homosexuality.
