Saint Reparata Being Prepared for Execution Bernardo Daddi Italian Martyred under Emperor Decius (ruled 249-51 A.D.), Saint Reparata was a patron saint of Florence, for whom its cathedral was named. This exquisitely painted panel is from the high altarpiece of the cathedral (the main panels are now in the Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence). Unusually, it had a double, or two-tiered, base (predella), the lower level of which showed eight scenes from the saints life. The Met owns two other badly damaged panels from the series. In this work Daddi transposed the grave manner of Giotto into a charming and rich narrative style.. Saint Reparata Being Prepared for Execution. Recent scholarship has shown that these indicate his role as the High Priest, whose unique privilege it is to enter the Holy of Holies of the Temple in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur. Around his leg is a rope held by another priest, whose job it would be to extract the high priest's body if he died as a result of not properly carrying out his sacred duties. The Seven Works of Mercy by Master of Alkmaar (active 1490-1510), Alkmaar, 1504, oil on panel. A Dutch city is the backdrop to this narrative that shows how a good Christian should help those in need. Christ stands among the spectators in almost every panel. The scenes give an impression of urban society around 1500. The work was badly damaged during the Iconoclasm of 1566, when Roman Catholic churches were vandalized by Protestants.
