Triptych with the Virgin and Child, and Saints Mary Magdalene and Ansanus. Orcagna was the leading Florentine painter of the mid-14th century. This altarpiece, which has survived almost intact, was commissioned in 1350 by a promi-nent citizen for a side-altar in a church. The depiction of the figures of the Virgin and Child and two saints reflects the rather stiff, hieratical style of the period. The frame is reminiscent of Gothic architecture.

Date: ca. 1310-15.The initial M illustrates an antiphon for the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25): Missus est Gabriel Angelus ad Mariam Virginem ("The Angel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary").In this initial, the illuminator used the form of the letter M to divide and frame the figures of the Virgin and the angel Gabriel, kneeling before her. The wood floor, rendered with a spiraling grain pattern, suggests that the setting is a domestic interior. This cutting may be an early work by the anonymous painter and illuminator known as the Maestro Daddesco, who was either a contemporary or a follower of the Florentine artist Bernardo Daddi and was a major figure in Florentine illumination during the first half of the fourteenth century. The Annunciation Made 1484-1519 Mantua. One of the very few Italian tapestries to survive from before the 1540s, The Annunciation depicts the archangel Gabriel announcing to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the son of God. This is one of the most sacred events in the Christian faith, as it is the very beginning of Christís life and the Incarnation of the Word. The scene is charged with symbolism the moment of conception is represented by the doveóstanding for the Holy Spiritóin the sky between Gabriel and Mary; the archangel holds a lily, a symbol of purity; and in the near foreground are a guinea fowl and a peacock, both of which signify immortality, and two doves that represent the souls of the blessed. The coats of arms at the top belong to Francesco II Gonzaga (1466ñ1519), marquis of Mantua, and were added at an unknown date after the initial weaving had taken place.
