Medallion with Saint John the Evangelist from an Icon Frame ca. 1100 Byzantine These nine medallions are from a group of twelve that once surrounded an icon of the archangel Gabriel. The medallions may have been sent as a gift from the Byzantine court to the neighboring Christian state of Georgia. The three medallions across the top form a Deesis, with Christ between the Virgin and Saint John the Forerunner (the Baptist). Below is the hierarchy of the Church: apostles (Saints Peter and Paul), evangelists (Saints Matthew and Luke), theologians (Saint John the Theologian), and, across the base, military saints (Saint George).. Saint Cuthbert (c. 634 20 March 687) was an Anglo-Saxon monk, bishop and hermit, associated with the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in the Kingdom of Northumbria. After his death he became one of the most important medieval saints of England, with a cult centred at Durham Cathedral. Cuthbert is regarded as the patron saint of northern England. His feast day is 20 March. He grew up near the new offshoot from Lindisfarne at Melrose Abbey, which is today in Scotland but was then in Northumbria. He had decided to become a monk after seeing a vision on the night in 651 that St Aidan, the founder of Lindisfarne, died, but seems to have seen some military service first. He was quickly made guest-master at the new monastery at Ripon, soon after 655, but had to return with Eata to Melrose when Wilfrid was given the monastery instead. About 662 he was made prior at Melrose, and around 665 went as prior to Lindisfarne. In 684 he was made bishop of Lindisfarne but by late 686 resigned and

Abruzzo Pescara Loreto Aprutino S. Maria in Piano1. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views include: a portico with four arches, a tower, an ornately sculptured portal with a fresco of the Pieta in the lunette (1559). Views of the interior include: a stoup, 17th century wood pulpit, altar paintings, marble altar and baroque altarpiece with details of sculptures and paintings. Most views are of the 14th century frescoes. On the entrance wall is a curious scene of the Last Judgment: Christ in a mandorla sits enthroned among various saints, music-making angels, Virgins and Patriarchs; three saints kneel below him, one in bishops' robes and two in Capuchin habit; instruments of the Passion lay on a table. In the lower register, nude souls cross a bridge, are judged by St. Michael, and then climb up a palm tree to enter a house whereupon they are clothed and dance. Other frescoes include scenes of the life of St. Thomas (under which is much graffiti), and various saints such as St. Catherine o

Cyril of Alexandria (Greek: Κύριλλος Ἀλεξανδρείας; c. 376 - 444) was the Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 to 444. He was enthroned when the city was at the height of its influence and power within the Roman Empire. Cyril wrote extensively and was a leading protagonist in the Christological controversies of the later 4th and 5th centuries. He was a central figure in the First Council of Ephesus in 431, which led to the deposition of Nestorius as Patriarch of Constantinople. Cyril is counted among the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church, and his reputation within the Christian world has resulted in his titles Pillar of Faith and Seal of all the Fathers, but Theodosius II, the Roman Emperor, condemned him for behaving like a 'proud pharaoh', and the Nestorian bishops at the Council of Ephesus declared him a heretic, labelling him as a 'monster, born and educated for the destruction of the church'. Cyril is well-known due to his dispute with Nestorius and his supporter Patriarch J
