Crozier early 14th century North Italian The crozier was the pastoral staff based on the shepherd's crook and carried by bishops, abbots, and abbesses. This example belongs to a group of objects made in Northern Italy. The form of the Holy Lamb and the black, red, and gold painted leaf decorations represent the final Gothic development of stylized patterns in the oriental manner which had flourished in Sicily and Italy in the 12th century. This crozier was originally made in sections with threaded ends. The three sections here have been damaged and repaired and are no longer separable. Altar Cloth or Podea. Culture: Byzantine. Dimensions: Overall: 58 1/2 x 51 1/8 in. (148.6 x 129.9 cm). Date: late 14th century.The double-headed eagle became the primary symbol of the state during the late Byzantine centuries and was also adopted for liturgical use. This huge eagle was probably used as an altar cloth or as a podea, a skirt hung beneath an icon. The inscription, which connects the owner with distinguished imperial dynasties, exaggerated the claims of a pretender to the patriarchal throne. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Abruzzo Chieti Chieti S. Tommaso Apostolo, Cathedral7. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Cathedral was begun in 840, and building continued in the 11th cent. It was reconstructed in the 14th cent. The interior underwent a radical restoration in the 18th cent. in the Baroque style. The campanile was built in 1335. Photos include exterior views of the facade and the campanile along with several details. The interior views show the Baroque nave with its vaults and cupola. There are paintings in the vaults and over the altars, including one of St. Thomas & Christ over the main altar. There are also photos of the marble paliotto in front of the altar (17th cent.). Other interior details are the baptismal font, a wooden statue of the Madonna & Child, and wooden statues of two saints, one St. Peter. These three objects tell a story of Mexicos early nineteenth-century Creole patriotism. The Mexican independence movement was fueled by Creoles, who were often denied a voice in colonial government. The 1821 Act of Independence formalized the independence that had been declared in 1810 and was signed by many Creole aristocrats, among them Don José María Gómez de Cervantes, whose portrait is on view nearby. New World figures like the Virgin of Guadalupe, who miraculously appeared to the Indian Juan Diego in 1521, and Saint Felipe de Jesús, the first Mexican-born saint, became important nationalist symbols, supporting the idea that the independence of Mexico was divinely ordained. The main portal is flanked by two other portals using fronts of sarcophagi for architraves. Photos show the exterior generally, the details of the portals and some side walls. Interior photos show the nave, altar and absidal chapels with their gothic vaulting. There are several photos of capitals with vegetal, animal and human motifs, the baptismal font and miscellaneous architectural details. The paintings include a Deposition (1400s), and two from the 18th cent. of a bishop and of S. Carlo Borromeo. There is a large crucifix over the altar (1310) and a ciborium behind the altar. Civil-Official Hyungbae (Rank Badge) late 19th century Korea The Joseon court adopted an insignia system in the mid-fifteenth century to display the ranks of officials. Worn on the front (hyung) and back (bae) of costumes, hyungbae, or rank badges, served as decorative status markers in a society that prized strict hierarchies. Initially permitted only for civil and military officials of the third rank and higher, their use was eventually broadened to all nine ranks.Various animals were used to designate rank, and the motifs evolved over the course of the Joseon dynasty. In 1871 the insignia were standardized to tigers for military officials and cranes for civil officials. The examples here are arranged clockwise by rank, from the highest, the double crane with bullocho (elixir plant) on the upper left, to the lowest, the single crane on the lower left.
