Miniature Altarpiece with the Crucifixion early 16th century Netherlandish Mary, Jesus mother, her head covered with a veil and her back to us, is almost lost in the crowd at center. Saint John gently places his hand at her back, protecting her from the clamor of men and horses. Close to the Cross, the Roman centurion Longinus touches his eye, which, according to the Golden Legend, was miraculously cured by blood and water that dripped from Jesus side. The left wing shows Abrahams sacrifice of his son, understood by Christians to presage the Crucifixion; at right, the healing power of the Crucifixion is compared to Gods favor toward the Israelites. With Moses they gather beneath a great bronze serpent that has been set atop a pole at Gods command, with the promise that a mere glance at the serpent would cure poisonous snake bites. In the roundel below is Christs Resurrection on Easter Sunday. In the left wing, Samson carries away the doors of the city of Gaza, a remarkable display

. Enameled and gold-plated plate of red copper, rectangular with triangular point above, from a reliquium, it was one of the narrow edges. On an engraved golden fond, with pattern of Romanesque tendrils, the apostle Petrus in a scraper of blue email is about a green robe in an arcade. Narrow yellow edges walk along the plowature of the copper lines of the Champlevé. He is wearing the key in the left hand, in the judge a book. The face, hands and the book are saved and engraved in red copper, the bare feet are plated. The disc-shaped aure skin is black email with a decor of white and yellow discs with brown-red core. Copper nails serve to the connection of the cabinet and are visible along the entire edge with heads. Also on the back traces of the bandage, namely by two rivets with double-headed crossbands of copper.

Plaque with the Pentecost ca. 1150-75 South Netherlandish The Acts of the Apostles recounts how they were infused with the Holy Spirit fifty days after Easter, an event celebrated by the feast of Pentecost. In this plaque, the use of gilding and of enamel over metal foil creates a shimmery effect appropriate to this mystical scene. Along with others of the same dimensions including three in the main building of the Metropolitan Museumit once decorated an imposing church furnishing, such as an altar, candlestick, or large cross. Plaque: The Crucifixion with Angels and Saints, c. 1400-1425. Northern Italy, Padua, 15th century. Verre églomisé (reverse gilded glass, engraved and painted); overall: 19.4 x 9.4 x 0.4 cm (7 5/8 x 3 11/16 x 3/16 in.). Small glass plaques like this were often combined with plaques of painted wood and framed within elaborate architectural reliquaries or small altarpieces. The decorative technique, called verre églomisé, is a process in which the reverse side of a glass is gilded and then engraved with designs. The pelican, shown above the cross piercing its breast to feed its young, became a common symbol of Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

Half of a Prayer Bead with the Prayer of the Rosary. Culture: Netherlandish. Dimensions: Diam. 1 3/16 × 1/4 in. (3 × 0.6 cm). Date: early 16th century. The paired medallions of this relatively modest carving not only illustrate the use of boxwood prayer beads but also seem to echo the recommendation of the fifteenth-century Dominican theologian Alanus de Rupe for praying the Rosary. He advised that the first fifty prayers be said before an image of the Virgin and Child and the second fifty before an image of Jesus crucified. Here, the robe of the woman kneeling in prayer, a string of beads in hand, touches that of Mary, and Jesus looks straight at her. Does she kneel before a statue, an image in her own head, or a miraculous apparition In the companion image, Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene mourn the death of Jesus. Devotion has caused the collapse of time and space. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Circular Box (Pyxis) with the Miracle of Christs Multiplication of the Loaves 6th century Byzantine In this depiction of the Miracle of the Loaves (Mark 8:1-6), an enthroned Christ is flanked by Saints Peter and Paul. Other disciples carry the loaves of bread he has miraculously produced to feed the multitude, loaves that the early church associated with the bread of the Eucharist. It is possible that containers like this were used in connection with the Divine Liturgy.. Circular Box (Pyxis) with the Miracle of Christs Multiplication of the Loaves 464317

Icon with Saint Demetrios. Culture: Byzantine. Dimensions: Overall: 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 x 3/8in. (19.7 x 12.1 x 1cm). Date: 950-1000.Standing erect, a spear in his hand and a shield at his side, Saint Demetrios is shown ready to protect the Christian faithful. The name of the popular Byzantine military saint is inscribed in two parts in Greek. Martyred in Thessalonike, the second most important city of the empire in the early centuries of the church, he has long been the patron saint of that metropolis. Images of saints in military dress are rare in Early Byzantine art (they appear on the chalices of the Attarouthi Treasure) but typical of the Middle Byzantine period. The cleft in the base of the frame may have supported a standard for carrying the image in processions or into battle. The holes drilled through the back indicate that it may have been used in the Latin West as a cover for a book. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Triptych with the Mandylion 1637 The Kremlin Armory Workshops, Moscow The frame honors the acheiropoieta, "not made by human hands," icon of Christ. The narratives on the doors tell its history from Christs leaving his image on the cloth with which he wiped his face on his way to Calvary through the cloths role as the protector of the kingdom of Edessa (in modern Turkey) and then its transfer to the Byzantine imperial capital in 944. In 1380 Muscovite armies, following the image on a battle standard, defeated the Mongols at the famous battle of Kulikovo. This elegant later work demonstrates the icons continuing importance to the Muscovite court.. Triptych with the Mandylion. Russian Painter , early 17th century. Russian, Moscow. 1637. Emperor Xiaowen and his entourage worshipping the Buddha ca. 522-23 China Together with a companion piece showing an empress and her attendants (now in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City), this depiction of an emperor and his entourage once adorned the Central Binyang Cave (also known as Cave 3) in the Longmen complex, near Luoyang, in Henan province. It was positioned centrally on the northeast wall between a group of protective semidivinities above and a narrative debate scene below. Xuanwu commissioned the construction of the Central Binyang Cave in honor of his father, the emperor Xiaowen (r. 471-99), and his mother, the dowager Wenzhou (d. 494); the emperor and empress in the reliefs are therefore believed to refer to his parents. A figure wearing court garments and holding a tasseled baton leads the procession. He is followed by a smaller figure wearing armor and another who stands before the emperor, holding an incense burner. The trees originally indicated the point a

Double Diptych Icon Pendant early 18th century Amhara or Tigrinya peoples In the seventeenth century, Ethiopian artists were increasingly exposed to forms of expression from Europe. During this period, double-sided diptychs became popular among the nobility as pendant icons worn suspended by a cord around the neck. The subject matter depicted on this example is a standard program for this genre of personal icon, as are the intricately carved cruciform designs that enhance the exterior surfaces of the protective covers. This icon is a classic example of the painting style developed during the late seventeenth century at Gondar, the trading center where King Fasiladas (r. 1632-67) established his capital. Portrayed frontally with slightly turned heads and simple, iconic gestures, the figures are superimposed upon neutral backgrounds. Bodies are delineated with thick black outlines, while faces are composed of flat areas of pink and orange. Curving lines and attenuated arcs are employed to
