Lazio Viterbo Tarquinia S. Giovanni Battista. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 The church was built in the 13th century, and was connected to the Knights of Malta. The main portal is flanked by two other portals using fronts of sarcophagi for architraves. Photos show the exterior generally, the details of the portals and some side walls. Interior photos show the nave, altar and absidal chapels with their gothic vaulting. There are several photos of capitals with vegetal, animal and human motifs, the baptismal font and miscellaneous architectural details. The paintings include a Deposition (1400s), and two from the 18th cent. of a bishop and of S. Carlo Borromeo. There is a large crucifix over the altar (1310) and a ciborium behind the altar. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of the 15th century facade of church and 16th century facade of the adjoining confraternity include details of the main portal and rose window (c. 1400) and bell tower (c. 1579). Views of a typical 16th century, romanesque-gothic interior, revealed after a 1970-72 restoration which removed the more recent baroque decoration. Vespers ca. 1895-1900 George Hitchcock In reaction to the industrialism and materialism of the modern age, a religious revival about 1900 reflected a general spiritual yearning among artists and their patrons. This painting shows a young Dutch woman walking to evening prayers, or vespers. She wears the typical Zeeland circular, colorful cape and white, transparent headdress that resembles a bridal veil. The religious subject and the detailed rendering of landscape and costume reveal the expatriate Hitchcock's strong dependence on French painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage. Hitchcock's assimilation of Impressionism is revealed in the unconventional composition, interest in pattern, and intense palette.. Vespers 11105

According to the ancient 'tamnan' or historical chronicle of Wat Phra That Haripunchai, the huge bronze gong that hangs in the northeast section of the temple grounds was cast in the year 1222 of the Buddhist Era 'during the reign of Queen Chamadevi', which corresponds to 679 CE - almost certainly too early a date. A 'belfry' consisting of two pillars and a beam (shown in this photograph) was erected to hold the gong in 1882. This was later replaced with the current (2011) raised, open pavilion in Burmese style in 1937. It is claimed to be the largest gong in the world, but is in fact smaller than the gong at the Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar).
