The Vimalakirti Sutra, celebrating the supremely wise layman Vimalakirti, provided canonical proof that enlightenment and salvation were possible even for believers who remained outside monastic orders.In this scroll, which transcribes chapters 5 through 9 of the sacred text, the illuminated frontispiece portrays Vimalakirti seated on a dais preaching to a large audience. He is depicted with the attributes of a traditional Confucian scholar: long beard, fly whisk, and armrest. An inscription at the end of the scroll indicates that it was executed in remote southwest China, present-day Yunnan Province. Lotus Sutra, Chapters 12 and 14 ca. 1667 Japan The Lotus Sutra, the most popular of all Buddhist scriptures, promises salvation to all who place faith in it. The set to which this handscroll belongs demonstrates how the courtly tradition of late Heian-period sutra copying was revived by the palace in early modern times. Each frontispiece has a delicate miniature painting executed in ink and gold. Margins above and below the text are decorated with designs stenciled in gold, silver, and various colors. The twelfth chapter, Devadatta” (Japanese: Daibadatta), refers to the name of a friend and mentor of the Buddha in a former life. The frontispiece illustration includes a scene of the daughter of the Dragon King, who lives in a palace in the sea, appearing before the Buddha and presenting him with a precious jewel. Tunic Bands with Warriors 7th-9th century The majority of early silks found in Egypt were excavated from the cemeteries of the Upper Egyptian cities of Antinoopolis (Antinoë) and Panopolis (Akhmim). The two examples displayed here are typical of the silks found at Akhmim: in general, they are brown, green, or pale yellow in color with vegetal borders and repeating designs divided into slender compartments separated by bands. Many of the silks have names inscribed in Greek, Coptic, or Arabic script, suggesting that the silks were produced after the Arab conquest of Egypt. The example seen here begins with a stylized palmette, above which a hunter holding a sword and shield pursues a lion and a rabbit. A candelabrum-like floral motif topped by birds completes the design. The bands are framed by a border of leaves and flowers, similar to that of the adjacent textile.
