The Penitent Magdalen ca. 1750 Corrado Giaquinto Italian According to the Golden Legend, Mary Magdalen spent the end of her life in a cave near Marseilles where she was visited daily by angels, their songs her only nourishment. Giaquinto shows her dressed as a penitent (around her chest she wears a cilice, a metal belt with spurs), her gaze focused on the gesturing angel and the crown of thorns displayed by a cherub. The painting was executed for Cardinal Mario Bolognetti (1690-1756) in Rome. Giaquinto was the foremost decorative fresco painter in Italy after Tiepolo, but this moving work shows him as no less a master of religious painting.. The Penitent Magdalen. Paintings such as this one were heavily indebted to the example of polychrome sculptures and recall in dramatic intensity the <i>pasos</i>--carved and painted ensembles of religious figures that are paraded through the streets of Spanish cities during the week leading to Easter. The Resurrection 1619-1620 Italy. The Resurrection, the only documented painting by Francesco Buoneri, was commissioned in 1619 by the Tuscan ambassador to Rome, Piero Guicciardini, as one of several altarpieces for his familyís chapel in Florence. In a turn of events that was not uncommon in the rapidly evolving artistic scene of early-17th-century Rome, the painting was rejected by Guicciardini and sold to another collector. The Resurrection exaggerates the bold contrast of light and dark and the realistic treatment of sacred figures that Caravaggio had introduced into Roman painting. Buoneri was apparently one of Caravaggioís closest followers. He may have been the ìboy Francescoî who assisted the painter during his last years in Rome, a personal connection suggested by his contemporary nickname, Cecco (for Francesco) del Caravaggio.. Atalanta and Meleager ca. 1616 Peter Paul Rubens Flemish Like many of Rubenss other works, this painting illustrates a story from the Metamorphoses of the Roman poet Ovid (completed A.D. 8). Meleager has killed a monstrous boar and presents its head to Atalanta, with whom he has fallen in love. In the background is a snake-haired Fury—a reference to the subsequent feuding over the boars hide that will lead to Meleagers death. Although a splendid example of Rubenss depiction of substantial, fleshy bodies, the picture is not in uniformly good condition. Parts are abraded and the drapery over the right shoulder of Meleager has been reconstructed on the basis of a workshop copy.. Atalanta and Meleager. Date: 1720s.When Bacchus arrived on the island of Naxos, he found the beautiful daughter of Minos, Ariadne, who had been abandoned by Theseus. Bacchus married her and her crown was transformed into a constellation by Jupiter. In the present picture Bacchus, wearing vine leaves in his hair, places a ring on Ariadne's finger. The subject was treated by Pellegrini a number of times. The present picture may date from after 1721, following Pellegrini's return to Venice and his extensive work in England, Düsseldorf, the Low Countries, and Paris.
