Private Devotional Shrine ca. 1490 German The predominance of female subjects suggests that this miniature altarpiece belonged to a woman. Saint Anne holds her diminutive daughter the Virgin Mary and her grandchild Jesus in the center; Saints Catherine and Barbara appear on the interior of the wings and Saints Ursula and Dorothy on the outside. The kneeling patroness occupies the place of honor to the right of the holy group. The mans long shirt, imitating coarse animal hair, indicates that he was a member of a lay penitent order or perhaps both belonged to a lay confraternity devoted to the cult of Saint Anne. At the bottom is the image of the face of Jesus, which was believed to have been imprinted miraculously on the veil of Saint Veronica just prior to his Crucifixion. The painted surfaces are exceptionally well preserved.. Private Devotional Shrine 469931

One of a Pair of Temple Pendants, with Busts of Male Saints Holding Martyr's Cross (front) and Leaf and Rosette Motifs (back) 11th-12th century Kievan Rus' When Kievan Rus, a powerful new state to the north of the Byzantine Empire, accepted Christianity as its official religion in 988, the aristocracy also adopted the manners and dress of the Byzantine court. Local artists soon produced their own versions of Constatinopolitan fashions. This temple pendant of precious metals worked in cloisonné enamel or niello are local variants of the more intricately detailed works made for the Byzantine court. As in Byzantium, temple pendants may have been worn next to the face by both the men and the women of Rus. The works shown here were perhaps buried by their owners when the Mongol armies under Batu Khan sacked Kiev in 1240.. Abruzzo L'Aquila Trasacco SS. Rufino e Cesidio96. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 The original monument was destroyed in 936, rebuilt, modified throughout the 16th century (with an addition to the nave in 1618), and restored in 1969. Exterior views include the bell tower and general building facades. Most views focus on the architectural sculpture of the Portale delle Donne and the Portale degli Uomini. Interior views in the Medieval core collection focus on a statue of St. Catherine in an aedicule (15th century); an ambo lecturn (pluteus) decorated with the four symbols of the Evangelists (c. 1267); a statue of the Virgin and Child under a sculpted baldachin on the entrance wall of the oratory (14th century) and the main altar composed of sarcophagus fragments of lions and peacocks in low-relief (8th-10th centuries). A baptismal font and possibly bas-reliefs (immured spolia) in the Oratory. Interior views in the Hutzel collection include: the altar statue of S. Cesidio, frescoes of the Annuncia

Tabernacle House Altar with the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Annunciation. second half 16th century (panels); ca. 1865-90 (frame) Reinhold Vasters German This tabernacle house altar contains reverse-painted glass panels depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Annunciation, which were probably painted in Lombardy in the second half of the sixteenth century. The wooden frame, however, was made in the nineteenth century, probably by Reinhold Vasters (1827-1909) or someone in his workshop. Vasters was a highly skilled German silversmith and goldsmith who for a time served as restorer at the Aachen Cathedral treasury. There, in the spirit of nineteenth-century historicism, he not only restored but also replaced worn or damaged liturgical objects. It is likely that the Lehman tabernacle house altar was made expressly to house a set of sixteenth-century reverse-painted panels. The unified program and the similarity of the

Booklet with Scenes of the Passion ca. 1300 (carving); ca. 1310-20 (painting) North French (carving); Upper Rhenish (painting) An exceptional ivory object, this diminutive booklet is unusual in that both the exterior covers, depicting scenes of the Passion, and the interior covers, containing representations of the Virgin, are carved. The religious nature of the booklet suggests that it served as an accessory for private devotion. The painted images facing the covers are later additions, since they transform the subjects of the carvings. Except for the two painted leaves, all have raised edges. Wax may have been applied to the surfaces, allowing prayers of intercession or litanies of saints to be inscribed on the tablets with a stylus.. Booklet with Scenes of the Passion 466105

Saddle, Saddle Pad, Stirrups, Rein, Stirrup Straps, Bit and Bridle, Breaststrap, Tassel, and Crupper 18th-19th century Tibetan The central decorative feature of this intricate eighteenth- or nineteenth-centry Sino-Tibetan saddle is the krttimukha, or Face of Glory, a glowerng mask that recurs in various forms throughout the religious ornament of Tibet, China, India, and Indonesia. According to one story, the krttimukha was a lion-headed demon created by the supreme Hindu deity, Shiva, and served both as his doorkeeper and as a manifestation of his divine power. The krttimukha motif spread with the expansion of Hinduism and, like many other aspects of Hindu belief and art, was eventually incorporated into the Buddhist tradition and widely disseminated by it. In both religions it symbolizes the beneficence of dinive authority and protection from spiritual and physical dangers. The krttimukha was used ubiquitously as an auspicious sign to ward off evil.On the saddle the krttimukha ap
