Madonna and Child with Saint Joseph Artist's working dates 1587-1613 Italy. The painter Ventura Salimbeni was active in Siena and Rome, leaving a group of seven etchings of religious subjects, many produced while working on Vatican frescos in the early 1590s. Here Salimbeniís mature Madonna lovingly interacts with her child as Saint Joseph stands guard outside. This print was copied several times in the early 17th century, with one version cropped tightly around the main figures, excluding Saint Joseph. All the copies were in reverse, which had the curious effect of correcting the artistís signature, which was reversed in the original, itself a copy after a Guido Reni etching.. The Holy Family with Saint Joseph Holding the Rose. Bartholomaeus Spranger (Flemish, 1546 - 1611) about 1595 This small-scale drawing on blue paper by Bartholomeus Spranger shows the Holy Family. In the foreground, the Christ Child nibbles on an apple, while the Virgin Mary lovingly gazes at him. St. Joseph, with a rose in his left hand, also fixes his gaze on the baby, but unlike Mary, he appears concerned. After planning the composition in black chalk on a sheet of blue paper, Spranger rendered the forms in pen and ink and modeled them in brown wash and white heightening. He evidently changed his mind regarding the position of St. Josephs left hand. Originally, it was shown held out straight with a flower pinched between two fingers. Unhappy with the detail, he covered it up with white heightening and redrew the arm slightly bent. There are a significant number of late Medieval Madonnas & Child paintings as well as High Renaissance paintings from the Bolognese school. The objects include a processional cross, and two reliqueries. Additionally there are some photos of manuscript pages of hymnals with objects they are displayed with. Object Notes: Hutzel notes are undated. The objects in the Musea Diocesano are included in his notes for the Duomo. We have kept Hutzel's numbering for the objects. There are also two prints for almost all the negatives, and the details were so similar (even if one photo is cropped more closely) that we have treated them as though there were two prints for each negative. Rest on the Flight into Egypt 1650-59 After Anthony van Dyck Flemish This print reproduces a painting by Van Dyck that shows the Holy Family resting during their journey to Egypt. Mary holds the infant Jesus with Joseph next to her and they are entertained by putti who dance and play musical instruments. Van Dyck painted several variations of this subject, and the one closest to this print is now at the Pitti Palace, Florence. The version the belonged to Sir Robert Walpole, hung at Houghton, was bought by Catherine the Great in 1779 and is now at the Hermitage, is titled "Madonna with Partridges."
