Man with a Steel Gorget Style of Rembrandt Dutch Rembrandt's authorship was doubted as early as the 1920s. In subject and style the painting is typical of the master's immediate circle in the 1640s; attributions to Govert Flinck and to Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, both of whom studied under Rembrandt in the 1630s, have been proposed in recent years. Portrait of a Man ("The Auctioneer") probably ca. 1658-62 Follower of Rembrandt Dutch Rembrandt had a large studio with many pupils who emulated his style and even his signature. As a result, fierce debate about the authorship of his paintings continues today. This work was universally attributed to Rembrandt until scholars "demoted" it in 1982, arguing that the rendering of space, texture, and anatomy suggests a skillful imitation by an unknown artist. The young, well-dressed sitter appears seemingly transfixed by the now-lost central imageperhaps of the Virgin and Childto which he offers a silent prayer as he pauses on a bead of the rosary held in his left hand. The man’s ring, bearing the coat of arms of the Dutch families of Six van Hillegom and Six van Oterleek, suggests that he came from the Netherlands. Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Gericault (1791-1824) Horace Vernet French probably 1822 or 1823 In the early 1820s, Parisian critics were hard pressed to decide which young painter held greater promise, Vernet or his close friendand friendly rivalGericault. This work shows Gericault as a Romantic artist, a type that had recently come into being based on Lord Byron's example. He is depicted deep in thought and possibly suffering physically as well. It was probably painted when Gericault was stricken with the disease that claimed his life in 1824. In a lithograph made by Vernet in 1823, Gericault wears the same scarf on his head.

Boy with a Lute ca. 1625 Frans Hals Dutch Inspired by Dutch Caravaggesque painters such as Gerrit van Honthorst and Hendrick ter Brugghen, Hals painted pictures of carefree musicians during the mid- to late 1620s. Here a young man pours a last drop of red wine onto his thumbnail, a signal to the innkeeper that he needs a refill, and to the viewer that (according to a Dutch rhyme of the period) "The glass is empty. Time is up." While Hals's authorship cannot be doubted, the picture's appearance has been affected by changes made by the artist himself and by later restorers. For example, the collar on the shirt and the lute string crossing over the thumb (thus obscuring the gesture's meaning) are not original.. Boy with a Lute 436626

Sitting in the occhio e mezzo (eye and a half) pose, also known as a three-quarter view, this unidentified young man wears his hair in the Venetian shoulder-length (zazzera) style. His dark cloak and berretto, or cap, and the tenebrous background emphasize his facial featurespale skin, aquiline nose, and full lipsas well as his auburn hair. Bellini places the figure behind a parapet, a compositional device originally derived from Flemish portrait traditions. Demonstrating his great technical facility, Bellini carefully paints a folded sheet of paper, or cartellino, which he signs in Latin. European Art ca. 1480

(106.7 x 88.3 cm). Date: 1519.Painted in Rome by one of the outstanding Venetian masters of the High Renaissance, this badly damaged portrait purports to show Christopher Columbus. The inscription identifies him as "the Ligurian Colombo, the first to enter by ship into the world of the Antipodes 1519," but the writing is not entirely trustworthy and the date 1519 means that it cannot have been painted from life, as Columbus died in 1506. There are other, quite different, portraits that also claim to show Columbus. Nonetheless, from an early date our picture became the authoritative likeness.
