Albrecht Durer (21 May 1471 - 6 April 1528) was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. Durer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance. This is reinforced by his theoretical treatises, which involve principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions.

Molly Wales Fobes 1790 Rufus Hathaway Born in Massachusetts, Hathaway worked as an itinerant portrait painter before pursuing a career in medicine. "Lady with Her Pets" is his earliest known work and depicts Molly Wales Fobes of Raynham, Massachusetts. Fashionably dressed, Molly sits in a Chippendale-style chair surrounded by a fantastical array of pets,” which were likely included as emblems of her beauty, loyalty, and affection. They may also reference her family’s interest in natural history, as her father was a professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy. The flowers decorating her fan and bodice, combined with her French-inspired hairstyle, identify Molly as a refined and worldly woman.. Molly Wales Fobes 11040

Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap 1532-35 Hans Holbein the Younger German Holbein painted this small roundel about 1532-35, after his return to England. The young sitter can be identified as a court official, for he wears the livery of Henry VIII, with the initials HR for Henricus Rex embroidered in black on his red coat. The frame is original and the reverse is painted black and decorated with engraved circles. It is possible that the portrait, which is in excellent condition, originally had a protective painted lid. Such intimate portrait capsules were easily portable, as well as more affordable than larger-scale likenesses.. Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap 436660

Memorial Portrait of Catharine Schultz (1789-1832) ca. 1836 American This painting and embroidery on silk was conceived as a memorial portrait following Catharine Schultzs death in 1832 at age 43, but it shows her as a much younger woman. The likeness was probably copied from a miniature portrait painted when Catharine was around 15 years old as the empire style dress and hair style date to 1803-1806. Newspaper fragments from the backing of the original period frame have advertisements for businesses that appear in New York City directories from 1833-37, which help date the portrait. The painted face is highly expressive and well-painted, undoubtedly by a professional. The needlework was likely done by one of Catharine Schultzs female relatives.. Tommaso di Folco Portinari (1428-1501); Maria Portinari (Maria Maddalena Baroncelli, born 1456) ca. 1470 Hans Memling Netherlandish The clever balance of verisimilitude and idealization in the features of this pair made Hans Memling the most sought-after portraitist of his day. The Florentine Tommaso Portinari was the branch manager of the Medici bank in Bruges, and probably commissioned these portraits from Memling upon the couples marriage in 1470. They originally formed a triptych with a central devotional image of the Virgin and Child. Beyond demonstrating the couples piety, Marias elaborate necklace and gown display their wealth and social status. Memling places the sitters before illusionistic frames, an innovation suggesting that the figures project into our space. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #2619. Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara (pair), c. 1520. Master of the Holy Blood (Netherlandish). Tempera on wood panel; framed: 91 x 34.5 x 5.5 cm (35 13/16 x 13 9/16 x 2 3/16 in.); unframed: 86.6 x 30 cm (34 1/8 x 11 13/16 in.). Saint Catherine holds the sword with which she was martyred, and Saint Barbara holds both a book and a ring symbolizing her scholarly pursuits and union with God. According to legend, the leather thongs with which she was beaten were transformed into peacock plumes. These two paintings were originally the wings of an altarpiece flanking a central panel, now lost, that may have depicted the Holy Family. The identity of this artist is unknown, but he is named for a painting in the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges. Bruges flourished as an international commercial center through the 1400s and early 1500s. Among its residents were many foreign merchants and bankers who, along with the Burgundian court, patronized artists and attracted specialized craftsmen such as f
