Maurits, Prince of Orange (1567-1625). Prince Maurits was stadholder and military commander of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. He sired eight children with six different mistresses. As he refused to marry he had no legal successor. Maurits stands proud in a ceremonial gilded suit of armour, his helmet and gloves are on the table. This design had been the norm for state portraits since 1551, when it was first devised by the Italian painter Titian.

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was anoutstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he iillustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Erasmus, and Sir Richard Southwell. This painting, titled Sir Henry Wyatt. It was long thought to be Sir Thomas More. Holbein painted Wyatt twice - This one is in the Louvre. Another is in the National Gallery of Ireland.

George Taylor II Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778-1860). George Taylor II, 1811. Oil on canvas, 57 5/16 x 35 7/8 in. (145.5 x 91.2 cm). This likeness of George Taylor II, a descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, shows influences from both France and the United States. Rembrandt Peale admired the refined portrait style of such Neoclassical French painters as Baron Gérard. The subtle transitions in color and tone in Taylors head and hands reflect the impact of Gérards fine modeling and distinctive palette. The composition and details of this work suggest the American colonial and Federal portraits among which Peale had been raised. The setting—an open-air, stone alcove with a landscape scene—may well have been fictionalized, since similar views appeared with some regularity in American portraits of the colonial period.
