Portrait of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen. Long accepted as the earliest known north Nether-landish self-portrait, this is probably a copy after a lost work. Such portraits illustrate the increasing status of artists. Jacob, whose traditional nickname means son of Cornelis from Oostsanen’, looks directly at us. Behind him is a paper with the date 1533 and his monogram, I W (inverted) v A (J[acob W[ar v[an A[msterdam’).

Date: ca. 1508.This painting and a <i>Portrait of a Woman in Prayer</i> (Kunsthaus, Zürich) originally formed the wings of a devotional triptych. The young, well-dressed sitter appears seemingly transfixed by the now-lost central image--perhaps of the Virgin and Child--to which he offers a silent prayer as he pauses on a bead of the rosary held in his hand. The man's ring, bearing the coat of arms of the Dutch families of Six van Hillegom and Six van Oterleek, suggests that he came from the Low Countries. A Benedictine Monk ca. 1478 Hugo van der Goes Netherlandish This mans robe and tonsured hair indicate that he is a Benedictine, but whether this is a portrait of a contemporary monk or an image of a saint is not clear. The panel was cut from a larger image, and unlike some of the donor portraits on display, this sitter gazes downward, creating a more contemplative mood.
