Edward VI (12 October 1537 - 6 July 1553) was King of England and Ireland from 28 January 1547 until his death in 1553. He was crowned on 20 February 1547 at the age of nine. Edward was the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour and the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant. During his reign, the realm was governed by a regency council because he never reached maturityAmbrogio de Predis, Bianca Maria Sforza, probably 1493 Bianca Maria SforzaPortret królowej Bony według miniatury akwarelowej na pergaminie szkoły flamandzkiej ze zbiorów Muzeum XX Czartoryskich w Krakowie. unknown, amateur painter, Atelier - A. Binant 7 rue Clery Paris (1823-1937), atelierAnne was crowned Queen of England on 1 June 1533. On 7 September, she gave birth to the future Elizabeth I of England. To Henry's displeasure, however, she failed to produce a male heir. Henry was not totally discouraged, for he said that he loved Elizabeth and that a son would surely follow. Three miscarriages followed, however, and by March 1536, Henry was courting Jane Seymour. In April-May 1536, Henry had Anne investigated for high treason. On 2 May, she was arrested and sent to the Tower of London, where she was tried before a jury of peers and found guilty on 15 May. She was beheaded four days later on Tower Green. Modern historians view the charges against her, which included adultery and incest, as unconvincing. Following the coronation of her daughter, Elizabeth I, as queen, Anne was venerated as a martyr and heroine of the English Reformation.Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), Haarlem, 1529, oil on panel, Maarten van Heemskerck, 1529Young Lady with a Fan. Anthonis Mor, who worked in both Spain and the Netherlands, was the court painter to Philip II, the king of Spain and hereditary ruler of the Low Countries. In his pictures of princely sitters, Mor brilliantly exploited the conventions of the full-length standing portrait to convey power and controlled reserve. He used a seated three-quarter-length format for sitters who did not belong to the nobility, making them appear more approachable. The woman represented here, and ther husband, who portrait is now in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, probably belonged to the merchant elite of Antwerp. Her cap and braid-trimmed bodice accord with Flemish, rather than Spanish, fashion.. Oil on panel, mounted on aluminum sheet . Author: Unidentified Artist.Hugo de Groot at a young age, Arnoud van Halen, 1710 - 1719 painting Although a small sticker with the name Henri IV has been applied on the back, this is a bust of Hugo de Groot as a 15-year-old young man. He was seen from the right in three -quarters profile and sat with his right hand in the side, the elbow turned to the viewer. The prodigy Hugo de Groot had already had a university study in 1599: during his stay in France in 1598 he was promoted to law. King Henry IV gave him a medallion on this occasion with a portrait of the king himself that De Groot holds here in the left hand. This medallion probably gave rise to the wrong identification. The identification as Hugo de Groot at a younger age is based on a portrait engraving by Jacob de Gheyn (II) from 1599, see Collection Rijksmuseum, RP-P-OB-9953 and on the fact that in early descriptions of the Panpoëticon Batavum there is A portrait of Hugo de Groot at a young age. Her gaze, which follows her outstretched arm, encourages the viewer to wonder at the unseen furnishings of her environment. Previous scholarship offers two unconvincing suggestions as to the sitter's identity: Margaret of York (1446 -1503), Duchess of Burgundy, and Mary of Burgundy (1457 -1482), Margaret's stepdaughter. The picture remains without a secure attribution, preserving, somewhat unfortunately, the air of mystery surrounding the portrait..
