Madonna and Child with Saints ca. 1520 Girolamo dai Libri Italian The saints (left to right) are Catherine of Alexandria, Leonard, Augustine, and Apollonia.Painted in about 1520 for the Augustinian church of San Leonardo nel Monte outside Verona, the picture was described at length by the sixteenth-century biographer Giorgio Vasari, who especially admired the landscape and enormous laurel tree. While the Madonna and Child reflect the work of Andrea Mantegna, the distant hill crowned with a fortress and the dead tree are taken over directly from Dürer's well-known engraving of Saint Eustace. The juxtaposition of the dead tree with the flourishing laurel refers to Death and Resurrection, while the peacock is a traditional symbol of immortality.A versatile artist, Girolamo dai Libri was equally famous as an illuminator of books, whence his name dai Libri ("of the books"). Of modern manufacture, the frame is based on Renaissance prototypes.. Madonna and Child with Saints 436518

Saint John the Baptist Bearing Witness. Artist: Workshop of Francesco Granacci (Italian, Villamagna 1469-1543 Florence). Dimensions: 29 3/4 x 82 1/2 in. (75.6 x 209.6 cm). Date: ca. 1506-7.This panel concluded the series to which the adjacent picture belonged. It shows Saint John the Baptist preaching. The two Pharisees at the left gesture towards the advancing figure of Christ. A work of great distinction, the picture is in many respects superior to the companion panel and must be by another artist. Collaborations of this sort were common in the Renaissance. A tentative attribution has been made to Raffaello Botticini, whose later works, however, never attain this quality. The affinities some of the figures show with the Doni Tondo of Michelangelo further point up the stature of the piece. Michelangelo and Granacci were friends and fellow pupils in the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
