The Annunciation 1420-1457 Germany. The Annunciation was one of eight scenes from the life of the Virgin decorating the inside of the wings of Johann Koerbeckeís masterpiece, the altarpiece formerly on the high altar of the Cistercian abbey of Marienfeld, near M¸nster in northwest Germany. The wings framed the altarpieceís center, where relics and a gilded statue of the Virgin and Child were displayed when the altarpiece was opened on feast days. The gilded backgrounds and festive architecture of the wings enhanced the splendor of the open altarpiece. The backs of the moveable wings, decorated with more somber Passion subjects in naturalistic landscape settings, were visible when the altarpiece was closed. The ensemble was dismantled in the late 17th century, and the panels were dispersed in the early 19th century, after the wings had been sawn apart, separating the Passion scenes from those on the interior.. Oil on panel, transferred to canvas . Johann Koerbecke

. The Virgin Mary, with the infant Jesus, St Michael and Joan of Arc. Painted with egg tempera in the time of Joan and recently restored by M Auvray, in Paris. St Michael holds a scale in which he weighs the souls, Joan holds her standard in one hand, and in the other her armor. Just as the Virgin, the infant Jesus, and St Michael, she has a halo, an attribute of sanctity. So reads the English translation of the French caption accompanying this image.

Coronation of the Virgin ca. 1455 Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian The richly decorated surfaces and extensive use of silver and gold indicate that this panelone of the artist's finest and best preserved worksderives from an important altarpiece, though its early history is not known. It is likely that a predella showing scenes from the life of the Virgin was originally below the main panel of the Coronation. Madonna and Child with Six Saints late 1440s Pesellino (Francesco di Stefano) Italian Pesellino specialized in delicately executed small-scale paintings ideal for private study or to carry for private devotion. Remarkably, despite their small size, the figures are described with a mastery that opens a new chapter in Florentine painting. Left to right the saints are: Anthony Abbot, Jerome, Cecilia, Catherine of Alexandria, Augustine, and George. The figure types and lighting reveal the influence of Fra Filippo Lippi, with whom Pesellino occasionally collaborated.. Madonna and Child with Six Saints 437276

The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve, c. 1400. Olivuccio di Ciccarello (Italian, Marche, 1360/65-1439). Tempera and gold on wood panel; framed: 191.5 x 99 x 11 cm (75 3/8 x 39 x 4 5/16 in.); unframed: 181.5 x 88.6 cm (71 7/16 x 34 7/8 in.). The Madonna is seated humbly on the ground nursing her child. Saint George and the Archangels Gabriel and Michael kneel nearby, while Christs disciples appear radiating from the Madonnas halo in the form of stars. In contrast with the Virgins purity, Eve lies in the lower part of the painting. Coaxed by the serpent, she raises the forbidden fruit to her mouth, thus condemning humankind through her original sin. The juxtaposition of these two images affirms the Incarnation and the role of Christ and the Virgin in the redemption story. The deep scratches on the surface of the panel, especially on the serpents face and Eves wrist, likely resulted from a zealous Christians symbolic attack on the power of evil. The artist, Olivuccio

Madonna and Child with Saints 1454 Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian This multi-panel altarpiece (polyptych) was painted to decorate a chapel in a church belonging to the Augustinian order, possibly in Cortona. Saint Nicholas of Tolentino was canonized in 1446 and wears the Augustinian habit. The altarpiece would have been completed with five pinnacles showing the evangelists and Christ, a base (predella) showing the history of Saint John the Baptist, and pilasters with small figures of saints. The archaizing style, with highly stylized figures on a gold background, is indicative of Giovanni di Paolo's preference for the work of his great fourteenth-century forebears.
