The Adoration of the Magi. Virtually all of the woodcuts after a design by Lucas were not carved by him, but by professional woodcutters. This is also the case here. The print lacks the artists refined lineation, but does evidence his characteristic folds and figure types. Moreover, the endearing rendering is infused with his distinctive sense of humour and tenderness.

The Crucifixion; The Last Judgment ca. 1440-41 Jan van Eyck Netherlandish Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, considered Van Eyck (his court painter) unequalled in his art and science.” In fact, Van Eyck's expansive yet microcosmic paintings seem observed through both a microscope and a telescope. In The Crucifixion, he evokes a remarkable range of emotions among the crowds, set against an imagined Jerusalem. Jan’s 1426 trip across the Alps during a diplomatic mission to Italy and the Holy Lands informed his naturalistic landscape depiction. He gives an equally palpable form to the horrors of the Last Judgment.Technical research has revealed that the two paintings were not always configured as a diptych, but originally served as the wings of a triptych or the doors to a tabernacle or reliquary shrine. The recently conserved frames are original, with biblical texts in Latin and rediscovered, now fragmentary, translations of those texts in Middle Dutch. Listen to experts illuminate this

The Nativity 1507-1510 Austria. Once thought to be by the young Albrecht Altdorfer, this painting is instead the work of a painter named after a winged altarpiece in the town of Pulkau, near the Austrian and Moravian border. Though the artist takes his name from the Pulkau altarpiece, he was probably active in Vienna. Like other loosely associated South German and Austrian artists of the early 16th century, who are now grouped together as the Danube School, the Master of Pulkau used exuberant natural forms to give a heightened emotional quality to his work. In this altarpiece wing, the swirling vegetation, excited angels, and oversized Virgin and animals direct the viewerís attention to the vulnerable Christ Child, who is the focus of adoration..
