Saint Catherine of Siena Receiving the Stigmata ca. 1447-65 Giovanni di Paolo (Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia) Italian This panel along with another in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.33) belong to a narrative cycle depicting scenes from the life of Catherine of Siena, a fourteenth-century Dominican saint, who was a minister to the poor as well as a mystic. The panels, based on a biography of Saint Catherine written in 1385 by her confessor Raymond of Capua, represent the first complete pictorial cycle of her life. This series, which also includes three panels in European Paintings (1997.117.2; 1997.117.3, 32.100.95), may have been produced following Saint Catherines canonization in 1461 and added as a predella (base) to a preexisting altarpiece. Two additional panels portraying standing male figures in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.55, 1975.1.56), also belonged to the same complex, which may have been commissioned by the guild of the Pizzicaiuoli (purveyors of dry goods) in 1447 for their

Adoration of the Magi 1470-1480 German Cartapesta (papier-maché) was an inexpensive and widely used medium for sculpture in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Due to its inherent fragility, few examples survive. This relief includes a playful detail embraced by artists working in other media as well: as the kneeling king touches the baby Jesus, the child reaches for his beard and grasps a tuft of hair on his balding pate.. Adoration of the Magi. German. 1470-1480. Cartapesta (papier maché) with polychromy and gilding. Made in Upper Rhine, Germany. Sculpture

The Theological Virtues: Faith, Charity, Hope. Artist: Italian (Umbrian) Painter (ca. 1500). Dimensions: (1) 29 1/8 x 17 7/8 in. (74 x 45.4 cm); (2) 29 1/8 x 18 in. (74 x 45.7 cm); (3) 29 1/8 x 18 in. (74 x 45.7 cm). Each figure is accompanied by an attribute: at the feet of Faith a dog, a common symbol of fidelity; at the feet of Charity a pelican symbolic of Christ's sacrifice; and at the feet of Hope a phoenix, symbolizing Christ's Resurrection. The series of allegorical figures, viewed against a continuous landscape, was probably intended to decorate the back of a spalliere (a high-backed bench or day-bed) or to be set into a wainscoting.
