Choir screen panel (one of six) ca. 1508-10 Craftsmen supervised by Nicolas Castille These panels constitute an early example of the French use of the ancient candelabra motif, favored in Italy, in which abstract ornament, fantastic beings, fruits, and foliage are combined in a vertical arrangement. The roundels at the bottom feature pairs of figures or scenes, such as Saint George slaying the dragon and a musician performing with his dancing dog next to a woman holding a monkey, as well as a profile portrait of the patron, Cardinal Georges dAmboise (1460-1510). The panels were originally part of a screen separating the choir from the rest of the chapel at the cardinals celebrated chteau de Gaillon in Normandy.. Choir screen panel (one of six) 193245

Design for a Circular Border with Nine Female Figures (the Muses) 1525-35 Attributed to Luca Penni Italian This small, carefully detailed design of nine, seated female figures, with allegorical attributes of the arts (the muses), is elegantly arranged along a circular border. The author of the drawing can now probably be identified as Luca Penni, thanks to Dominique Cordellier, author of the monograph on this artist, and who recognized it among the anomymous Netherlandish sixteenth-century drawings (written communication of September 5, 2014). The Met's drawing has had quite a history of incorrect attributions, since it was acquired in 1959, for a small sum of money, but erroneously attributed to the eighteenth-century British School. Although previously thought to be a ceiling design, this was almost certainly a working drawing intended for a three-dimensional object of circular shape. The outer and inner circular outlines are drawn with compass, and the drawing has been cut into se

Panels from an Ivory Casket with the Story of Adam and Eve 10th or 11th century Byzantine This panel is one from a series of scenes of the lives of Adam and Eve that originally decorated a small box. On this panel Adam and Eve, identified with Greek inscriptions, work at a metal forge; on the other panel they harvest grain (see 17.190.138). Two intact caskets that show similar scenes of Adam and Eve's toil also display Ploutos, the personification of wealth-a reminder to the owner of the treasure stored in the casket that prosperity is a gift from God and that God favors those who repent of their sins.. Wall decoration with floral and vegetal design ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian Stucco reliefs were commonly used to decorate elite Sasanian houses like these examples from Maaridh VI in the Ctesiphon area. These four tiles (MMA 32.150.5, 32.150.6, 32.150.7, 32.150.8), found in the remains of a vaulted reception room, or iwan, formed part of a larger wall covering. Because only one mold was needed to create the tiles, the intricate vine motif could be repeated endlessly and still be quite complex. The reconstruction suggests the effect of such panels in their original setting. The city of Ctesiphon was located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 20 miles (32 km) south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. It flourished for more than 800 years as the capital of the Parthians and the Sasanians, the last two dynasties to rule the ancient Near East before the Islamic conquest in the seventh century. Systematic excavations in the Ctesiphon area were undertaken by an expedition in 1928-29 sponsored by

Capricorn (section of a zodiac frieze). Culture: Italian, Venice. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 6 1/2 × 7 7/8 × 1 7/8 in. (16.5 × 20 × 4.8 cm). Date: ca. 1530-40.Typically Venetian are the punched grounds against which the forms dance on these frieze sections. More sinuously elegant than reliefs by leading Venetian bronze sculptors of the generation active about 1500-1520--Alessandro Leopardi, Vittore Gambello (known as Camelio), and the Master of the Barbarigo Reliefs--the present two (see also Sagittarius, 2004.440.2) may date slightly later but are still informed by High Renaissance standards of expression and orga nization. The band to which they belonged was exceptionally large--on the basis of these two of the zodiac's twelve signs, the original ring has been projected at thirty-two to thirty-eight inches in diameter. Its function can only be surmised. At Sagittarius's top left are faint remains of an inscription, which is mostly filed away. One can discern F. CITA0 (abbreviat

Dosseière de la Cuirasse du Roi Henri II. The magnificent Apollo gallery in the Paris Louvre holds in addition to the French Crown Jewels some of the most precious art objects of the Grande Nation. For the publication Le Trésor Artistique de la France, which is published from 1878, the photographer Léon Vidal releases the exquisite treasures. Also in the printing process one leaves on the expertise of the learned engineer. The method developed by Vidal photochromy technique, a method presented for the first time, makes it possible to transmit the color of the collection pieces in a quality reproduction. Similar to the chromolithography, three layers are printed separately into strong, translucent colors. As a base, Vidal takes a photomechanical image, which contributes the deep black tones to the colored image result; The degree forms a fine rivis layer. In the shiny figures, not only the radiance of the art objects, the expensive produced, elaborate copies are today masters today. (An

Game Piece with Hercules Throwing Diomedes to His Man-Eating Horses ca. 1150 German This carved ivory disk is a tableman, a game piece used in tables, the medieval precursor of backgammon. Each player had fifteen pieces; traditionally one set depicted the labors of the classical hero Hercules and the other showed the feats of Samson, the Old Testament strongman. In this example, Hercules appears on the left, holding upside down Diomedes, king of Bistonia. According to the myth, Diomedes kept man-eating horses until Hercules fed them the king himself. Here the horses, who have doglike faces and lions' manes, tear into their former master.. Game Piece with Hercules Throwing Diomedes to His Man-Eating Horses. German. ca. 1150. Elephant ivory.
